The Habitat Organization

About us

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever make up the nation's largest nonprofit organization dedicated to upland habitat conservation. This community of more than 500,000 members, supporters and partners is dedicated to the protection of our uplands through habitat improvement, public access, education and advocacy. A network of 754 local chapters spread across North America determine how 100 percent of their locally raised funds are spent — the only national conservation organization that operates through this grassroots structure. Since its creation in 1982, “The Habitat Organization” has dedicated more than $1 billion to 580,000 habitat projects benefiting 28.8 million acres. At the heart of Pheasants Forever is the unique grassroots system of fundraising and project development that allows members to see the direct result of their contributions. Pheasants Forever and its quail division, Quail Forever, empower county and local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds will be spent - the only national conservation organization that operates through this truly grassroots structure. As a result, chapter volunteers are able to see the fruits of their efforts locally, while belonging to a larger national organization with a voice on federal and state conservation policy.

  • Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever Applaud Introduction of CRP Improvement and Flexibility Act Pheasants Forever (PF) and Quail Forever (QF) are proud to support the bipartisan CRP Improvement and Flexibility Act. This bill was introduced by U.S. Senators John Thune (R-S.D.), Amy Klobuchar (D.-Minn.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), and Tina Smith (D-Minn.), who are members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. Senators Thune and Klobuchar also serve in their respective roles as Senate Majority Leader and Ranking Member of the Committee. The bill expands upon legislation introduced in the previous Congress to strengthen the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). “The Conservation Reserve Program is one of our nation’s most effective tools for improving wildlife habitat, water quality, and soil health on private lands, and is a vital part of the farm safety net,” said Andrew Schmidt, Director of Government Affairs for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. “The CRP Improvement and Flexibility Act will make this critical program work better for farmers, ranchers, rural communities, and wildlife. PF & QF are grateful to Majority Leader Thune, Ranking Member Klobuchar, Senator Moran and Senator Smith for their continued leadership in strengthening CRP and ensuring it remains a cornerstone of private lands conservation.” Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/g24wg6Mz

Topsoil is vital for growing food, yet it’s eroding at an alarming rate. This is why we’re helping farmers grow food in a way that can build healthy soil, improve water quality and resilience, foster biodiversity, and support farmers’ profitability. In 2023, we joined forces with Walmart and made it our shared goal to advance regenerative agriculture across 600,000 acres by 2030. We're proud of the progress we've made so far. With support from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, we’ve distributed grants to help farmers implement regenerative techniques across the Northern and Southern Plains Meet the partners advancing this work in their own communities. #GStandsForGood

  • New On the Wing Podcast: Counting Pheasants and Exploring Season Changes with Minnesota DNR Host Bob St. Pierre visits with Dave Trauba, leader of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish & Wildlife, about the logistics behind the state agency’s annual August roadside counts and how data from that survey is used within the agency. • Corridors in the Corn // Prairie Strips Stitch Habitat Back Together Rows of corn and soybeans stretch across the Midwest like a sprawling sea – a monoculture of crops that leaves little room for wildlife habitat. These crops are the backbone of modern agriculture, but they’ve increasingly pushed species like bobwhite quail to the margins, and, in many instances, erased habitat completely. Yet, amid the monoculture of row crops, prairie strips rise like an oasis of wildflowers and swaying native grasses – bringing balance, connectivity, and beauty to the landscape. Prairie strips are exactly what you might imagine – strips of reconstructed tallgrass prairie in agricultural croplands. This management practice is often used to combat biodiversity loss and environmental damage associated with row-crop agriculture. Prairie strips can provide a myriad of benefits by reducing soil erosion, improving soil and water quality, providing wildlife habitat, and simply adding beauty to the landscape. • Pheasants Forever and Partners Dedicate 1,300-Acre Carp Swamp WMA Addition Officials, supporters and area residents recently gathered to dedicate the Paschke Family Tract addition to the Carp Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The 1,300-acre property was purchased by Pheasants Forever (PF) through the Build a Wildlife Area® program and was recently conveyed to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources “In terms of total acres this is one of the larger projects we’ve ever done,” said Sabin Adams, PF’s Minnesota state coordinator. “It’s an amazing property that will support important species and provide recreation opportunities for the public, fitting squarely within our mission of public lands acquisition.” “It's truly amazing what can be accomplished when people are committed and dedicated to a cause. Take that commitment and add in some strong partnerships, and we have the Paschke Tract. This was really a great day,” said Minnesota Sharp-Tailed Grouse Society President, Mike Chalich. Pheasants Forever will be working with the DNR to restore 27 acres of existing cropland to a diverse mix of grasses and forbs on the north unit this summer. During the winter, plans are to remove 622 acres of brush over both the north and south units of the acquisition. Some of the cut brush will be used to fill approximately 2,000 feet of ditching. #pheasantsforever #thehabitatorganization
