  • This industry isn’t ready for the exponential growth it will be facing over the next 20 years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for home health professionals is projected to grow by 22% between 2022-2032. That’s an average of 684,600 openings for home health and personal care aides EVERY YEAR over the course of a decade.

  • Some interesting research data has emerged, suggesting a possible link between home-based palliative care and a reduction in ER visits. For those who may not be familiar, palliative care is a tool used to improve the quality of care for people living with a serious illness. In this case, home-based palliative care can be an effective solution for people who struggle to have their needs met in the hospital. A study conducted by the West Health Research Institute of Blue Shield of California analyzed claims data from over 2,000 people between 2017 and 2019. From it, the study found that members enrolled in home-based palliative care (HBPC) had fewer total hospitalizations and emergency room visits compared to before the program started. Even more surprising, the cost of care dropped, from $3,996 to $2,746 by the end of the program. While this data is promising, there is more study required. If, for example, researchers can determine a statistical significance between HBPC and mortality, it would have huge implications for the future of palliative care. It’s only a matter of time.
