It was an honor to host our friends from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory last night to celebrate 60 years of their innovation and scientific leadership! PNNL has been inventing the future for six decades. We can't wait to see what's ahead. Thank you to lawmakers from both chambers, both sides of the aisle and both sides of the Cascades, along with representatives from the governor's office, Department of Commerce, WSU and other key agencies for joining us. We were proud to host guests from Washington State University, including welcoming Chris Riley-Tillman, Provost and Executive Vice President, for his first visit to PNNL. During the visit, we showcased some of our key facilities, including the Energy Sciences Center and the newly opened Grid Storage Launchpad. It was a great opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to ongoing collaborations and share our enthusiasm for working with WSU students. Looking forward to strengthening our partnership and advancing impactful research!

Life is about more than DNA 🧬 More than 20 years after the human genome was sequenced, scientists are exploring the world beyond genes. PNNL scientists Katrina Waters and Tom Metz organized a session highlighting predictive phenomics—a pivotal concept that explains much of the world around us—at the 2025 AAAS annual meeting. Raised in the Philippines, chemical engineer Mariefel Olarte's interest in science was inspired by her grandmother, a sixth-grade science teacher. "I would find her books and read them," Mariefel says. "I came across a book that talked about diagnosis, and that got me interested in the research process because diagnosing an ailment is finding a solution to a problem through asking questions. I found it exciting." 👩👧📖 That excitement for knowledge led Mariefel to pay forward her professional development to new generations of researchers. "Education was always a high priority for my parents because it was seen as a tool to improve our lives," she says. "We have a saying in the Philippines: 'Youth is the hope of the motherland.' It has driven me towards thinking about the future and how to give back through mentorship." 👩🔬⚛️ Mariefel joined PNNL in 2011. Her research focuses on removing atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfurs from biomass (like sewage and waste sludges) and agriculture residues to produce hydrocarbon for transportation. She also explores the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in chemical processing. Check out why Mariefel pursues such work, plus the guidance she provides to interns along the way: https://bit.ly/3PIi6Wz
