  • A LETTER TO OPEN'S COMMUNITY Dear friends, Many of us are waking up to devastating news from the U.S. presidential election. While not all our community members are in the United States, this outcome has implications that extend far beyond borders, affecting movements for human rights, family equality, and sexual freedom worldwide. For those feeling scared, angry, or hopeless - we see you, we're with you, and we're holding space for these valid emotions. While we sit with these difficult emotions, we also remember: throughout history, marginalized communities have faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles, yet found ways to not just survive, but build power and create change. The path forward isn't through any single election or political figure - it's through the daily work of building resilient communities, networks of mutual aid, and movement power. Real transformation happens in our communities, through: - Supporting each other through mutual aid and community care - Building educational resources and sharing knowledge - Creating resilient support networks - Working toward internal liberation from oppressive systems - Building solidarity across movements In the coming weeks, OPEN will be convening a community meeting to discuss how we move forward under this new reality. Our leadership team is meeting to develop concrete strategies for protecting our community and advancing our mission in an increasingly hostile political environment. We'll share more details about these gatherings soon. For now, we encourage you to: - Check in with your loved ones - Connect with your local community - Take care of your mental and emotional health - Remember that you are not alone The road ahead may be difficult, but we are stronger together. Throughout history, times of adversity have often strengthened communities and catalyzed powerful movements for change. We will protect each other. We will support each other. We will continue to build the world we want to see. With determination and solidarity, Brett Chamberlin Executive Director

  • In 2024, OPEN led the grassroots push to pass nondiscrimination protections for diverse family and relationship structures in Berkeley and Oakland. With your support, we'll expand these protections to 8 more cities in 2025. ✨ All gifts matched until December 31! ✨ Donate now to DOUBLE your impact: www.open-love.org/donate 💥 These landmark laws, drafted by our movement partners at the Polyamory Legal Advocacy Coalition, protect families and individuals from discrimination in housing, public services, and more. Most importantly, they prove that change is possible when our community comes together.

  • As workplaces evolve to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse workforce, it's crucial that our inclusion efforts extend beyond traditional DEI categories to encompass employees with stigmatized family and relationship structures. Through our work with Fortune 500 companies in the Open Workplaces Initiative—a joint program with Modern Family Institute—we've identified six key actions employers can take: 1️⃣ UPDATE POLICY LANGUAGE: Add explicit protections against discrimination based on "family or relationship structure" in your employee handbook, code of conduct, and hiring materials. Clear policies signal to employees that they'll be treated equally. 2️⃣ SUPPORT EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS: Consider creating space for employees with diverse family/relationship structures - either as a standalone ERG or within existing LGBTQ+ or family-focused groups. 3️⃣ INVEST IN EDUCATION: Ensure HR, Legal, and management teams understand diverse family/relationship structures. Review your DEI training - does it include non-monogamy and family structure? Reaching out to us for help connecting with experts and targeted training modules! 4️⃣ USE INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE: Replace "spouse" with "partner(s)" in company communications. For events, consider phrases like "bring a loved one of your choice" instead of "+1" - this includes everyone from polyamorous folks to single employees who might want to bring a friend or family member. 5️⃣ EXTEND BENEFITS EQUITABLY: Review your benefits policies. Can employees add multiple partners to insurance? Does your parental leave policy recognize diverse family structures? Small changes here can have huge impact. 6️⃣ COLLECT EXPANDED DEMOGRAPHIC DATA: Collect Anonymized Data by including optional, anonymous demographic questions asking about family and relationship structure in your employee demographic surveys, and see if it’s possible to identify specific needs within this group. These changes create a more inclusive environment for everyone - from non-monogamous employees to chosen families. They signal that your organization values all types of families and relationships, leading to increased employee satisfaction and retention. Ready to make your workplace more inclusive?
