  • Join us for the next episode of This Is CDR as we welcome Alexis Dunand, Associate Policy Lead at CarbonGap, to discuss their newly updated Carbon Removal Policy Tracker – a powerful tool mapping the latest policy developments shaping carbon removal across Europe. CarbonGap is leading the charge in bridging the gap between carbon removal innovation and policy, ensuring that high-quality CDR solutions receive the support they need to scale. Their Policy Tracker highlights where progress is being made, where gaps remain, and what’s needed for the EU to build a robust CDR strategy. In this session, we’ll cover: - How the Carbon Removal Policy Tracker works and what it reveals about Europe’s CDR landscape - The biggest policy gaps and opportunities for scaling durable carbon removal - How policymakers, advocates, and industry leaders can use this tool to drive action Don’t miss this conversation on the evolving policy landscape for CDR in Europe and what it means for the future of carbon removal. About our Guest Alexis Dunand is Associate Policy Lead at Carbon Gap, where he focuses on expanding the Policy Tracker’s coverage. He joined Carbon Gap to contribute to the fight against climate change, being convinced that carbon dioxide removal constitutes a key, yet missing and often misunderstood, element of climate policy. Prior to joining Carbon Gap, Alexis was acting as a civil servant at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He previously served as a research consultant at Carbonfuture, focusing on EU and US CDR policy. Before that, he was part of the leadership team of illuminem, heading the content creation section. He started his CDR journey during his MSc in Environmental Sciences at Wageningen University & Research, having written his MSc Thesis on Swiss CDR policy. He holds a BA in International Relations from the University of Geneva. Now based in Brussels, he is a member of the Global Shapers Community.

Is 'What is CDR?' the wrong question? CarbonPlan just published an insightful article saying that it is, fighting over definitions takes focus away from how to best build the future sector. It is a great article. But in a follow-up piece, I argue that we can't dodge the question. We still need to determine what is CDR when issuing credits and making claims. This ties into a long debate on whether 'wide accounting' is necessary when issuing CDR credits. For example, taking into account all legacy mining emissions when capturing CO₂ using mine waste. An example of a wide accounting standard is Absolute Climate. I argue that strictly requiring wide accounting for all standards would be a suboptimal use of resources, excluding some very promising CDR pathways, making net zero goals more expensive to achieve. Climate @ Stripe & Frontier

We’re kicking off Frontier’s fifth round of prepurchases!  This year, we are shifting from one annual application cycle to a rolling review process and focused on purchasing from projects that address specific gaps in the carbon removal field and within our portfolio. We’re particularly interested in… - Enhanced Weathering & Mineralization projects that enhance mineral reactivity, offer co-benefits like environmental remediation, or partner closely with industrial operators with untapped sources of alkalinity (e.g., mining, steel, cement, lime) to build quickly, cheaply. - Biomass carbon removal projects that innovate on anaerobic digestion to maximize carbon removal efficiency and BECCS technologies that can take advantage of smaller, dispersed sources of biomass that are more difficult for centralized facilities to process cheaply. - Marine carbon removal projects that demonstrate clear co-benefits (e.g., local deacidification, fishery yield improvements) and have strong strategies to produce or source feedstocks with gigaton-scale potential. - DAC projects that use energy efficiently and flexibly to minimize grid emissions or are paired with mineralization approaches to hedge against near-term geologic storage constraints.   To read more about these focus areas and apply: https://lnkd.in/eFB9EthB We’re excited to see what you’re building!

Today, Cascade Climate is pleased to announce the release of “Farming with Rocks: Policy Priorities for Enhanced Rock Weathering”. The purpose of this report is to introduce policy stakeholders—particularly those in the U.S. and EU—to ERW, and to highlight opportunities to further support this promising carbon removal and agricultural land management practice through both new and existing policy levers. In the report, we identify three key policy priorities to help realize ERW’s carbon and agronomic potential: 1) Invest in dedicated ERW research and development on carbon quantification, agronomic impacts, and environmental risks and co-benefits.  2) Provide financial assistance to address barriers to scale and support farmer adoption.  3) Increase confidence of prospective carbon removal buyers and investors to enter the market through high-rigor standards and clear regulatory frameworks. We hope this report can act as a valuable resource and starting point for ERW policy discussions. While our near-term focus at Cascade will be on translating these recommendations into action in the U.S. and EU, we welcome opportunities to engage other jurisdictions interested in exploring ERW policy opportunities. Carbon Dioxide Removal │ Coalition building | Advocacy | Urban Transformation | Carbon Markets, Policies, Accounting | ***Personal views***

On February 18th, Christopher Neidl and I will speak about cities and carbon removal with the indomitable Wil Burns of the Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal American University. Cities hold a vast untapped potential for CDR. A first assessment of the global urban CDR potential published in Nature (link in comments) estimated a potential to remove upwards of 1Gt CO2 annually. This is a conservative figure. We'll discuss two initiatives aimed at unlocking this potential: 👉 City CDR Initiative: A global research, capacity building, and investment program for municipal governments. We'll touch on a current Breakthrough Energy funded project which is baselining the urban removal methods, technical value chains, and cross-policy strategies, and explore what's next. 👉 City CDR Purchasing Challenge: A community-driven initiative to mobilize local support for high-quality CDR purchases. Learn how it empowers residents to lead campaigns in their cities, raise funds to purchase vetted CDR credits while fostering local government engagement in combating climate change. Join us as we explore this new frontier in climate action! https://lnkd.in/eh-kP9dm

✂️ We are breaking the rules of carbon credit purchasing: Rule 1: "Buy from proven solutions" Us: We fund promising experiments Rule 2: "Focus on immediate impact" Us: We invest in future breakthroughs Rule 3: "Minimize cost per ton" Us: We maximize innovation per dollar Why? Because the nascent carbon removal industry needs more than just customers - it also needs catalysts. Building tomorrow's climate solutions means looking at where the needs are the greatest today and what has the biggest future potential. For the first time, Milkywire publishes our catalytic CDR purchasing strategy. We go through, method by method, how forward-looking buyers can help catalyze the carbon removal sector. The needs differ quite a lot between methods. Our goal is to make sure this CDR-startup decade sets the foundation for gigatonne-scale removal in the coming decades. ⏩ Read the strategy here: https://lnkd.in/dNcyZe8j We have already supported 27 CDR suppliers, often as the first buyer, and are now in the middle of selecting new ones for our Climate Transformation Fund. Reach out If you want to join in supporting these innovators! We are not expecting everyone to be a catalytic, risk-taking buyer though. Of the 27 suppliers we already supported, many have matured into being cost-effective, proven solutions with immediate impact, and we can help companies buy credits from these too.
