The Bergen Vicinage celebrated Black History Month with a talk from local historian Cheryl Bullock Hannah, who gave a presentation about her great-grandfather, Charles Harmon Bullock, the son of former slaves and a key figure in the Colored Young Men’s Christian Association movement in the early 20th century. After holding several high-level positions with the organization, which provided educational and cultural programs in racially segregated communities in the United States, Mr. Bullock transferred to Montclair where he supervised the construction of a modern building for the Y.

Berkeley College student Christopher Neira spent two days shadowing staff from both the Probation Supervision and Criminal divisions as part of the Passaic Vicinage’s Shadowing Program. Christopher observed a day in the life of a probation officer to better understand the role probation officers play in the Judiciary. The Shadowing Program is designed to help expose college students to the many careers within the Judiciary.

Staff from the Union Vicinage attended a career exploration day last week at the Union County Vocational-Technical School’s Academy of Law and Justice in Scotch Plains as part of the Judiciary’s outreach efforts. The students spoke with representatives from the vicinage’s Office of the Ombudsman, the family and probation divisions, human resources, and the interpreters unit to learn about career and volunteer opportunities in the Judiciary.
