About us
For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

We are excited to share that shipbuilders have successfully installed the first valve manifold assembly created by additive manufacturing technology on a new construction US Navy aircraft carrier. The assembly, which is approximately 5 feet long and 1,000 pounds, reflects our pursuit of all opportunities to support construction using additive manufacturing. To date, the shipyard has created more than 55 additively manufactured parts installed on both new construction vessels and those currently in the fleet, with plans to install more than 200 additional parts this year. Thank you to the NNS shipbuilders whose work led to this milestone! Read more about this accomplishment here: https://lnkd.in/e2_bGb4H

Newport News shipbuilder Margaret Abrams started a career as a CNC machinist at the shipyard last year after completing a 16-week Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program in Danville, Virginia. When she graduated from high school in 2021, Margaret knew she wanted to work with her hands. After attending college for mechanical engineering and deciding it wasn’t for her, she found out about the NNS and ATDM partnership. Watch this video to hear Margaret describe how the partnership jumpstarted her career and now allows her to support the US Navy every day.

Late last year, Newport News Shipbuilding-built aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (#CVN70) welcomed a new captain. His name is Rudder – and he’s an expeditionary facility dog, specially trained to thrive on an aircraft carrier at sea. He assists in the mental health care of sailors, sensing when a crew member is experiencing anxiety or is under pressure. NNS is proud to sponsor Rudder, who was trained by Mutts With A Mission. We know he is making a huge difference for the sailors on CVN 70! Read more here: https://lnkd.in/et_aFfQt --- U.S. Navy photo
