Im excited to join Vincent Guilamo-Ramos and our partners at Manatt Health to discuss the importance of shifting care up stream toward early intervention and prevention. And the key role nurses play in this effort.

Expanding access to reproductive health care improves health outcomes for mothers, babies and families in North Carolina — and our pharmacy partners are key to this important work. Thanks to our retail and independent pharmacies across the state, North Carolinians are able to receive contraceptive services at pharmacies without a prescription from another medical provider, including counseling and education from a pharmacist about options for contraception and other preventive services, dispensing of contraception and connection to ongoing care if needed.

Access to safe and potable water remains a top concern in Western North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Currently, approximately 160 boil water advisories remain in effect and 27 water plants are closed and not producing water. The NC Department of Health and Human Services is sharing guidance on actions people can take to ensure water is safe and to prevent waterborne disease or illness after the storm. I joined Governor Cooper, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, NC Emergency Management Director William Ray, MPH, and several of my cabinet colleagues in Western North Carolina today to see first hand the unprecedented impact of Hurricane Helene and hear directly from residents and our county partners. The damage and loss are heartbreaking. NC Department of Health and Human Services team members across the state are working around the clock to support and care for those that have been impacted by this storm. We are all committed to doing everything we can to helping North Carolinians survive and recover. Thanks to the entire team at Mission Hospital hospital for their heroic efforts to keep serving their comminity, even as they face such challenges. We are focused on hospitals and healthcare facilities ensuring they have power, water, food, medical supplies, and staffing needed to care for residents and patients. As of Sunday night, all acute care hospitals in the region have had their power restored. We know many hospitals are still on temporary water and many long term care facilities are also on temporary power and water. We are working with NC Emergency Management, NC Air National Guard, and private businesses to use roads and airdrops to get food, water, and supplies to these facilities as fast as possible. We are working to get staff from our facilities in eastern and central NC to western facilities. We’re grateful to the federal government and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for providing disaster medical assistance teams. We have activated statewide patient coordination and transfer, using land and air assets to move critical patients to reduce pressure on western facilities. Over 200 ambulances have been deployed to support patient movement. We have over 20 open shelters with over 1000 people in those shelters. We are in the process of opening additional shelters in Rowan and Buncombe, and providing more staffing supports to all shelters. We have 3 fixed sites delivering food to 30 different locations across western NC. These deliveries are to shelters, fire departments, and churches. There are an estimated 20,000 meals being delivered today. I have called Western NC home, and I know how resilient this community is. I have also seen communities coming together over the past few days in the face of impossible circumstances. While the storm has taken out phone and internet and it may often feel isolating, I promise you that there are many people that are working hard, wanting to help, and not stopping until we have reached every North Carolinian.
