The Earth's Best Defense

About us

NRDC is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. Worth Magazine has named NRDC one of America's 100 best charities, and the Wise Giving Alliance of the Better Business Bureau reports that NRDC meets its highest standards for accountability and use of donor funds. NRDC was founded in 1970 by a group of law students and attorneys at the forefront of the environmental movement. NRDC lawyers helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws. Today, our staff of more than 300 lawyers, scientists and policy experts -- a MacArthur "genius" award-winner among them -- work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Beijing. The New York Times calls us "One of the nation's most powerful environmental groups." The National Journal says we're "A credible and forceful advocate for stringent environmental protection." With the support of our members and online activists, NRDC works to solve the most pressing environmental issues we face today: curbing global warming, getting toxic chemicals out of the environment, moving America beyond oil, reviving our oceans, saving wildlife and wild places, and helping China go green.

  • We filed our first lawsuit of the year against the Trump administration for revoking protections that cover more than 625 million acres of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The move opens up these areas to offshore oil drilling, which would be catastrophic for the coastal communities, Tribes, and marine life that rely on pristine waters for their lives and livelihoods. When Trump tried to hand over our oceans to Big Oil in 2017, we sued—and won. We’re headed to court to fight back again.

  • The beginning of President Trump’s second term has been a full-on blitz to gut essential environmental protections, fast-track destructive projects, derail efforts to advance equity and justice, and dismantle the government to serve the rich. Many of his plans will face legal and public challenges, and we’re confident in our ability to help slow down some and block others. To everyone supporting our tireless fight, we’re grateful to be standing with you on the right side of history.

  • We expect insurance companies to protect us from extreme weather events as they become supercharged by climate change, but instead, they’re reducing and even cutting coverage for those living in high-risk areas. For the past five years, large insurance companies in California have declined to renew coverage for nearly 3 million homeowners, leaving countless families to shoulder the costs of a crisis. No place is immune to the impacts of climate change, so insurance companies need to hold up their end of the bargain.

  • It’s been one month since multiple wildfires wreaked havoc in Los Angeles. The scale of climate catastrophe is nearly unimaginable—until you witness it firsthand. Our hearts go out to our colleagues and neighbors who have lost everything in the fires. Oil and gas have fueled the climate crisis for decades, and this type of disaster is a direct result of fossil fuel pollution. Multiple analyses explain how high winds mixing with recent dry, hot temperatures—caused by heat-trapping gases that come from burning fossil fuels—led to these specific devastating events. And while climate disasters affect everyone, they pose disproportionate burdens to the most vulnerable. As communities are trying to recover from this tragedy, the fossil fuel industry continues to rake in the money and avoid responsibility.

  • Three weeks in, President Trump has launched the worst assault in U.S. history on the environment and public health—which we anticipated—but still shocked our conscience. The administration is prioritizing oil and gas profits while putting our communities, economy, and future on the line. If the administration’s actions succeed, we would see more pollution, more emergency room visits and premature deaths, more habitat destroyed and wildlife lost, and more unchecked climate disasters. Nobody voted for that—and it’s not what most of the country wants. Like many people making their voices heard across the country, we’re ready to fight back.
