Mothers for Justice & Equality reposted this
When we founded Listen to Your Mothers, we made a commitment to ensuring that women had the working conditions they deserved. However, we couldn’t launch this very important work without acknowledging the history of the first working women in America who are often invisible. As a descendant of African-American women of Gullah Islands, Harlem, and Cherokee women, I KNOW without knowing them the struggles my ancestors dealt with. It is my privilege and honor, to be able to lift their stories and voices as I live a dream they only prayed for. If your an employer who wants to ensure your working conditions are the best they can be for all your employees,Listen to Your Mothers has your back! Like the shirt I’m wearing in the image below? you can get your own: https://lnkd.in/enKQjURr
This #InternationalWomensDay, take a moment to read about the history of working women from our Co-Founder Renée Ọmọladé (Omolade). If you do a quick search for "first working women in America," Renée notes, you’ll see many articles highlighting the experiences of white women entering the workforce during the 1920’s; a narrative which contrasts the historical reality, perpetuating a dangerous and inaccurate portrayal of the American workforce. Renée shares a more accurate and full history of working mothers in America, which acknowledges the significant contributions of Black women to the nation’s economic prosperity. https://lnkd.in/eMTT9P6U
