𝙈𝙤𝙤𝙫'𝙨 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚 𝙏𝙍-31 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: 𝙎𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙆𝙚𝙮 𝙀𝙭𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 In the world of financial technology, security isn't just a feature—it's fundamental to everything we build. Today, I'm excited to share Moov's latest contribution to the open-source community: our TR-31 implementation, designed to streamline secure cryptographic key exchange in financial applications. I contributed a ton of code to this project, which made me happy! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗥-𝟯𝟭? TR-31, defined by ASC X9.143, is the financial industry's standard method for secure cryptographic key exchange between systems and devices. Think of it as a sophisticated envelope that not only protects sensitive key material but also carries crucial metadata about how these keys should be used, what algorithms they're compatible with, and other essential attributes. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 One practical application of TR-31 can be seen in modern digital wallet implementations. When services like Apple Pay process transactions, they send a KeyBlock utilizing TR-31 along with a pre-shared key. This setup enables secure decryption of the KeyBlock to retrieve a one-time key, which is then used with AES-128-CBC to decrypt the actual card data. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Our Go implementation sets a new standard for TR-31 processing speed. Initial benchmarks show it running 10 times faster than the widely-used OpenEMV implementation in C, and thousands of times faster than our previous Python version. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 While production environments typically rely on Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) for these operations, testing and continuous integration present unique challenges.
