Our mission: to inspire conservation of the ocean
About us
The mission of the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the ocean. Our diverse and dedicated team works in many ways to assure the future health of the ocean and the people who depend on a healthy ocean for their survival. Our living exhibits and visit programs are considered among the best in the world. We offer free education programs for more than 100,000 schoolchildren and educators each year -- and our new Bechtel Family Center for Ocean Education and Leadership is taking that work to a new level. Rigorous science underpins all of our work to advance policies that promote ocean health in the United States and internationally. Our respected Seafood Watch program is a global leader, giving businesses and consumers the tools to transform how fish are caught and farmed around the world. Our award-winning exhibits feature the rich diversity of marine life along California’s central coast -- from sea otters and kelp forests to jellyfish and sharks. Our newest exhibition, "Into the Deep / En lo Profundo," features never-before-see animals from the deep ocean. We attract nearly 2 million visitors a year and engage 3 million followers through our social media channels. Our education programs are shaping a new generation of science-literate ocean conservation leaders, and giving educators better tools for ecosystem-based learning. We promote science-based action on behalf of key species like sea otters, sharks, and Pacific bluefin tuna. We've advocated successfully to create marine protected areas, eliminate ocean plastic pollution, and end to the shark fin trade, and we support policies to address climate change and ocean acidification, which threaten ocean health, and our own survival.

Protecting the ocean has always been a bipartisan effort, in Congress and across multiple White House administrations. In the face of ill-conceived attacks, it's time to raise our voices in support of ocean science.

The ocean is filled with marvelous life and magical moments. Underwater photographers bring many of these creatures and moments to us, as in this showcase of award-winning images. We're thrilled that former Aquarium staffer Patrick W.'s encountery with a South American sea lion is the featured image in The Guardian's article highlighting the honorees. Which of these photos is your favorite? https://lnkd.in/geD8KQA7 #MarineLife #photography #UnderwaterPhotography #inspiration

They carry their pups on their chests and form rafts to stay safe and warm as they drift together on chilly, choppy waters. 🦦 We love all the adorable and unique ways southern sea otters rely on each other to stay afloat. Like otters, love and community keep us afloat too—today and every day. Whether it’s your otter half or that group chat with the weird name, share this post with the pawsome people who buoy your spirits! In a time full of change and uncertainty, allow yourself a gentle break—a kind moment to clear your mind and find peace. Like this bat ray gliding effortlessly through the blue, a shark cruising with quiet confidence, or a giant sea bass drifting in the gentle sway of the sea. https://lnkd.in/gyuWMj-U #meditation #MomentOfZen #calm #relaxation #serenity

Here's some positive news: Birgitte Krogh-Poulsen, the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s senior fellow for human rights and social equity with our global seafood program, is joining experts from around the world in New York City this week to review progress on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8): Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. The expert working group was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Labor Organization, and others to identify ways to accelerate progress on this important goal. Birgitte brings valuable independent expertise and insights from her work in the seafood industry to this critical convening. I look forward to connecting these discussions back to the Aquarium’s longstanding efforts to tackle the intertwined environmental, social, and economic issues needed to improve the sustainability of global seafood production. It's the people who make the Aquarium great. Our staff and volunteers are passionate about their work and about connecting our guests to marvelous marine life. It takes many talents to advance our mission: to inspire conservation of the ocean. One of those awesome individuals is Jessica Moore, community programs manager with our Education team. Today, Jessica shares the story of how she was inspired by a visit to the Aquarium as a child -- and how her passion and impact ripples across generations, making waves for a better world! https://lnkd.in/gNdAt7QC #BlackHistoryMonth #DayInTheLife #StaffProfile

There’s so much happening in the world right now and a lot of the change taking place is unsettling. In the United States, we’re seeing the rapid advance of deeply troubling approaches to climate action, conservation, environmental justice, and equal rights. Amid these changes, one thing is certain: the Aquarium is holding fast to our values. We remain fully committed to working to create a just and equitable world where the ocean flourishes and people thrive – together. In the face of a retreat on commitments to address climate change and to maintain vital ocean protections, we’ll continue to drive progress on a renewable energy future, and action to curb plastic pollution and sustain our nation’s bedrock environmental laws. We’ll keep working with partners – regionally, in California, nationally, and around the world, as a voice for science-based solutions and to keep the ocean and people at the heart of climate conversations. We’re just as committed to building strong partnerships that help address environmental injustices in our society – injustices that leave far too many, particularly the most vulnerable among us, to bear the greatest burdens, whether from climate change, plastic production and pollution, or other threats. Our values affirm that no one should be limited by systemic inequities and that a world that stifles human potential is one we cannot accept. We need everyone’s talents to move forward. As we support policies to protect the living ocean, we will center diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in shaping effective solutions. We’re honored to count you among our partners in this work. Together we are strong. We know there's a lot of work ahead of us, and it's important to remember: We’re not alone. We’re building on the efforts of those who have come before, we ground our work in science, and we’re supported by a network of members, donors, friends, and partners who share our mission – and our values. Working together, we will make progress toward creating the world we imagine. We’re confident that we can accomplish great things. As we reflect on our values, we reaffirm that our love for the ocean propels us. We have fierce hope, even though our blue planet faces serious threats. We believe that humans can work together to heal the ocean and make a better future. Thank you for being an important part of this work – and this journey. https://lnkd.in/gUHUkrSS #ActOnClimate #EnvironmentalJustice #PlasticPollution #Collaboration #DEIA #ScienceBasedSolutions #CleanEnergy #ActForTheOcean
