About a year ago I went looking for some women VCs in Phoenix to speak on a panel. I found two... only two. It was baffling and made me feel a little angry, which led to sadness, and then back to baffled. TWO?! I made a list of the women in Phoenix who are connected to the venture ecosystem and within a couple of months had met with all of them. They were just as baffled (and angry and sad) as I was. I also met with men who agreed that something needs to change, so I called a meeting and we started talking about it. Almost one year and a handful of really productive meetups later, I'm proud to share that there is now some real momentum in Phoenix around getting more women into VC. This matters for a few reasons. ⭐ Women deserve to build wealth through this asset class. With 2/3 of the US wealth ($30T) falling to women by 2030, this presents a large opportunity. ⭐ Women make up just 11% of investing partners in venture funds, which, ironically matches closely to the 13% of capital that gets invested in companies with a at least one woman founder. ⭐ <2% of venture capital goes to startups with women-only founders. ⭐ More women in positions of capital influence means more venture dollars flowing to women-led companies. ⭐ We all benefit when we have a diversity of ideas in the marketplace. I'm officially sending up the bat signal to all women who are venture curious, and men who support having a more equitable venture landscape.
