5 Fascinating Facts About México’s Largest Pyramid – Cholula, Puebla  Did you know? The Great Pyramid of Cholula (Tlachihualtepetl) holds the title of the largest pyramid in the world by volume—even bigger than Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza! Note: The largest Egypt pyramid is over twice as tall but the Cholula pyramid is several times larger in actual size compared to the Giza Pyramids. 1. Hidden in Plain Sight: This massive structure doesn’t look like your typical pyramid. Over centuries, it was covered by vegetation, making it appear as a natural hill. Atop the "hill" sits the beautiful Nuestra Señora de los Remedios church, blending ancient history with Spanish colonial charm.  2. It’s Ancient: Construction began around 300 BC, and it grew in layers over a thousand years as different civilizations added their touch. That’s 1,000 years of history in one spot! 3. An Underground Maze: Beneath the pyramid lies a network of tunnels stretching over 5 miles/8 km. These were cut in the last century by researchers so they could better understand the historical origins of this massive structure. Today, visitors can explore a portion of these passages to see the original pyramid layers. 4. World Heritage Status: As part of the historic zone of Cholula, the pyramid is recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance. 5. Breathtaking Views: From the top of the pyramid, your clients can enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding regions. To the west they can see Popocatépetl, the active smoking volcano and next to it, Iztaccíhuatl.
