Venture into the heart of Sri Lanka, where wildlife such as elephants and leopards must delicately navigate survival in a rapidly developing world. Memphis Zoo’s Curator of Research, Dr. Sheila Poo, and Senior Veterinarian, Dr. Felicia Knightly, traveled over 9,000 miles to celebrate the grand opening of the CARE Base Camp, foster important collaborations with dedicated conservation partners like Dilmah Conservation, and see the ongoing development of the CARE Field Station. With projects such as these, Memphis Zoo and committed partners can be a beacon of hope for Sri Lanka's wildlife. #memphiszoo #srilanka #conservation #education #research #save #animals

An exciting milestone for the dusky gopher frog recovery! On New Year’s Eve, we found the first egg mass of the season at our Mississippi reintroduction site, marking 5 straight years of successful breeding from 2021 to 2025 for this Conservation 6 focus! With consistent breeding year after year, our recovery program is making a real impact in saving this critically endangered frog. Special thanks to our Audubon Nature Institute partners for their help monitoring this success! We also want to give a big shoutout to everyone who voted for us in the Josh's Frogs Amphibian Conservation Project Grant contest – we placed 4th out of 2,000 votes and earned $500 for our mock release project! Thank you for your continued support of our mission to save wildlife. #memphiszoo #conservation

The dusky gopher frog, one of our Conservation Six initiatives, is critically endangered. For many years, we have been releasing captive-bred frogs into the wild in southern Mississippi to establish a new population. To monitor their progress, we recently installed camera traps to track how this population is doing. Before installing the cameras, we set up a drift fence around the pond to guide the frogs toward our cameras. When a frog enters a camera trap, its picture is taken from above. These photos allow us to passively track the population and assess their status over time! A special thanks to our partners from the Audubon Institute, Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks, US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Army Corp of Engineers for assisting us in this conservation project! 📸 Postdoctoral Researcher, Dr. Anne Sabol #memphiszoo #conservation#duskygopherfrog #research

Memphis Zoo’s journey to Sri Lanka marked an exciting chapter for wildlife conservation! Over 12 days, we celebrated the grand opening of the Conservation, Awareness, Research, and Education (CARE) Center Basecamp, explored the future CARE Field Station, and connected with high school and university students while building relationships with potential conservation partners. Working with the incredible Tropical Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) team, including founders Professor Enoka Kudavidanage and Ravi Amarasinghe, we gained deeper insights into Sri Lanka’s unique ecosystems and the challenges of protecting its biodiversity. A special thank you to Dilmah Tea for your warm hospitality and continued support. This is just the beginning of new collaborations and impactful projects. The Memphis Zoo is firmly committed to working alongside our conservation partners and broadening our impact to reach our shared goals of creating adventures and saving wildlife through research, education, and animal welfare.

This past week, Memphis Zoo had the honor of meeting Dilhan Fernando, Chairman and CEO of Dilmah Tea to explore potential opportunities for future collaboration and events. Their conservation branch, Dilmah Conservation, has been a strong partner in supporting Memphis Zoo’s efforts in Sri Lanka, joining us on several events the past two weeks; including, sponsoring the CARE Center opening, hosting multiple student workshops, and fostering future partnerships. 🫖🌱 Beyond bringing Sri Lanka’s famous tea to the world, Dilmah dedicates 15% of its profits to conservation efforts, supporting impactful initiatives across the country. Together, we are committed to preserve our shared biodiversity and build a sustainable future. 🌎 #conservation #sustainability #srilanka #memphiszoo #dilmah
