I had the pleasure of attending training this week at Ludowici’s manufacturing facility. They’ve been producing some of the highest quality clay tile in North America since 1888. It was a great opportunity to learn about historic clay tile and see firsthand how it's manufactured at scale while still maintaining the quality of the original product. They’re a perfect example of what American manufacturing can be. Thanks to Ludowici and John and Lisa Jensen for such an insightful experience.

Thank you Peter H. Miller Hon. AIA and team for hosting The Traditional Building Conference Series in Historic Williamsburg this year. The Hard Hat Tour of the Wren Building led by Susan Reed, AIA from Glavé & Holmes Architecture and Constance Lai, FAIA from Grunley Construction Company, Inc. gave us a chance to see clay tile roofing material made by Ludowici in the 1930s that looks identical to a wood shingle. Restoring the roof of Galveston’s Bishop’s Palace means more than replacing tile, it’s about reviving the architectural soul of a Texas landmark. We’re honored to partner with the Galveston Historical Foundation, Inc. to faithfully recreate the original red-brown clay tiles and intricate design details first envisioned by architect Nicholas Clayton in the late 1800s. From handcrafted profiles and custom glazes to mythical rooftop creatures that once existed only in architectural drawings, every element is being brought to life with historical accuracy and enduring craftsmanship. Vanderbilt University’s new residential colleges feature LudoSlate Premier, a mix of three random-width tiles that can be blended for a staggered appearance, more like slate, from Ludowici. LudoSlate is also lighter weight than traditional clay tile and is interlocking, which makes it easier to install.
