Food deserts—areas with limited access to affordable, nutritious food—may be closer than you think. For individuals living in these communities, the lack of fresh, healthy food options often leads to poor dietary choices, chronic health conditions and cycles of poverty. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank works to address these challenges by distributing fresh produce, protein, and other nutritious foods through a network of partner agencies and direct distributions. Programs like nutrition education further empower families to make healthier choices when options are available. We proudly recognize the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) as our February Agency of the Month! Since 2001, NDLON has been a powerful advocate for day laborers, migrants and low-wage workers, providing resources and building leadership within these communities. Most recently, in response to the devastating Eaton Fire, NDLON swiftly mobilized relief and recovery efforts to support those most affected, including launching an Immigrant Fire Relief Fund. Their commitment to solidarity and mutual aid is truly inspiring. The LA Regional Food Bank has partnered with NDLON since 2020, and together, we have worked to ensure immigrant workers and their families have access to nutritious food. We look forward to continuing this meaningful collaboration as we fight hunger and support our neighbors.

With support from The Anthem Foundation, the LA Regional Food Bank's Food Rx Pilot Program addresses the intersection of food and nutrition insecurity and chronic health conditions like type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Partnering with FEAST, this initiative combines nutrition education with access to healthy food to empower participants to make lasting changes for a healthier future. Over 12 weeks, participants gained valuable insights into reading nutrition labels, preparing balanced meals and making informed food choices—all while receiving monthly boxes of nutritious food. Beyond education and food, the program fostered camaraderie, offering participants a supportive community to share recipes, tips, and encouragement.
