We are honored to have been chosen in partnership with Mithun to design the first traditional residence hall to be built on Georgia Tech’s campus in almost 50 years. Did you know that extreme heat is deadlier than any other weather-related hazard? #LAS relies on data-driven cooling strategies, such as optimizing building orientation and appropriate fenestration, to passively mitigate heat exposure through design. Heat mitigation starts in the #landscape; strategies like tree canopy shading, using high-albedo materials for roofing and paving, and vegetated roofing can significantly cool the microclimate surrounding a building, resulting in reduced mechanical cooling loads. Passive survival strategies such as these and operable windows with external shading can improve comfort of buildings when utilities are interrupted.

Net-Zero Water A Key Feature of Living Buildings A flower receives all its nourishment from natural elements—rain and sunlight from the sky and nutrients from the soil. When a flower dies, it leaves behind seeds—it has given us more than it consumed. “The flower is the metaphor of a living building,” said Shan Arora, director of the The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at Georgia Institute of Technology, during the “The Future is Net-Zero Water” panel presentation at the #PMI24 Manufacturing Success Conference.
