From Diwali puja to delicious lunch, rangoli creations, fun poker nights, lots of sweets, and laughter — the celebrations were filled with the warmth of togetherness and excitement. It's moments like these that strengthen our bond as a team and remind us of the values of unity and gratitude that Diwali brings. Celebrating the festival of lights together is a tradition we cherish, lighting up not only our workspace but also our shared commitment to a brighter, more prosperous future for rural India.

“When we started building in this space, building for Bharat wasn’t cool. It wasn’t even a term," says Arjun Ahluwalia, co-founder and CEO of Jai Kisan. The stark contrast between financial landscapes across urban India and rural Bharat caught the attention of Arjun Ahluwalia and Adriel Maniego and led them to start Jai Kisan, a Blume Fund III company, in 2019. In our latest spotlight, Blume's editorial fellow Shreevar Chhotaria explores how Jai Kisan is building a rural revolution by changing how rural India builds, buys, and transacts. The numbers speak for themselves. From a modest start with Rs 24 crore of disbursed loans in FY20, Jai Kisan has come a long way in a short time. Cumulatively, it has facilitated over Rs 6,000 crore in loans, benefitting 800,000 farmers. They work with 350 corporates and 100,000 merchants to make this happen. 🚀 But before any of this could be built, they had to earn farmers' trust. They decided there was no better way to earn it than being with the customers. So, in an unusual move, before launching Jai Kisan, they shifted to a village eight hours from Mumbai, set up a shop there, and lived the lives of their customers. This 'roll-up-your-sleeves' attitude is the foundation of Jai Kisan's successful journey. It has since become a mandatory part of the onboarding at Jai Kisan: all new employees must work in the villages within the first few months. Arjun says, "It helps our team members understand the customer’s problems and build for them in a manner that appreciates the challenges and the ecosystem they live in and brings a sense of empathy when designing and developing our products.” Another thing they’re loud and proud about is their frugal mindset. Arjun shares, “Despite raising $90 million and disbursing ₹3,000 crores annually, we maintain a low burn rate, resulting in a substantial corpus in our accounts. This is not just the result of a few individuals; it's our culture where every dollar counts and creates value.” On the team’s ability to tie their values with their business model, Ashish Fafadia, partner at Blume Ventures, says, “Jai Kisan has firmly established itself as a crucial player in the rural ecosystem by building strong relationships with large corporates and farmers. Their resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic was remarkable, maintaining industry-leading repayment rates even amidst a global crisis, signaling the strength of their business model.” As they continue to scale, Jai Kisan's unwavering focus on serving the underserved with empathy ensures that the gap between India and Bharat is being bridged, one village at a time.
