McDonald's ran a simple pricing experiment last year, removing the $ symbol from their menus and saw a 9.5% sales lift. Why? Seeing currency symbols in front of numbers activates the same areas of your brain as physical pain, and research shows removing them reduces that feeling of pain by up to 95%, making decision-making much easier. This isn’t just a pricing trick, it’s also psychology at work. The same principles apply to messaging: - Friction kills engagement - Small tweaks can drive big lifts - Data-led experimentation wins At Iterable, we see this every day. Brands that optimise their messaging whether through language, timing, or personalisation - see massive increases in engagement. For example: - Swapping a generic "Your order has shipped" email for "Your new favourite thing is on its way" creates anticipation and excitement. - Replacing a price-heavy discount email with an emotion-driven offer ("You deserve a treat today") leads to higher conversions.
