Internet shutdowns have devastating social and economic effects, and in January, the South Sudan government mandated a 30-day TikTok and Facebook ban. Luckily, the Internet Society South Sudan Chapter sprang into action, releasing a statement, delivering copies to government offices, and appearing on a popular radio station to urge the government to lift the ban. Days later, their efforts were successful! Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gpHtrtX4

Building affordable, reliable, and resilient access solutions and providing women with skills to start using or advance their use of the Internet can help close the gender gap and bridge the digital divide. Explore the new gender data gathered by Internet Society Pulse and learn why tracking up-to-date data is critical to helping connect the remaining 2.6 billion people who are unconnected. #IWD2025 #InternationalWomensDay2025 #DigitalDivide
In light of #InternationalWomenDay2025, we wanted to highlight Internet use by gender, particularly in the countries with the widest gender gap. In the chart below, you can see the top 10 countries with the largest proportion of male Internet users compared to female Internet users (below) and the top 10 countries with the largest proportion of female Internet users compared to male Internet users (top). It's interesting to note that the country with the most significant difference is Maldives, where female Internet users (95.5%) way outnumber male Internet users (76.4%). Overall, female Internet users outnumber male Internet users in 36 countries, while male Internet users outnumber female Internet users in 89 countries. There is no difference in Bahrain, Iceland, Norway, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. https://lnkd.in/dxrAaCr3

In January, our president and CEO, Sally Wentworth, visited the Waimanalo Community Network in the Nation of Hawai’i. The network, which we supported, connects the community of Pu’uhonua o Waimanalo, enabling residents to access the global marketplace, unlock opportunities for education and entrepreneurship, and more. #CommunityNetwork #CommunityConnectivity

In the small villages of Lasebella, Balochistan—a remote area of Pakistan—it can be difficult to access quality education and job opportunities, especially for women. The Welfare Association for New Generation (WANG), with our support, opened the WALI Community Network in 2022. At WALI, anyone, regardless of their gender, can easily connect to the Internet and the opportunities it brings.
