Helen Turner Hill, President & CEO of Explore Charleston, has been appointed to the U.S. Travel Association’s Executive Board and named Chair of its Nominating and Membership Committee. This prestigious leadership role places Charleston at the heart of shaping the future of travel nationwide. As the industry prepares for a decade of historic global events—including America’s 250th anniversary, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the 2028 Olympic & Paralympic Games—Helen and her fellow board members will play a key role in advancing policies that enhance security, efficiency, and the overall travel experience. Dear Community, I want to take a moment to address recent statements regarding potential runway expansion at Mt. Pleasant Regional Airport (KLRO). It has come to our attention that there may be some misunderstandings or misinformation circulating about this matter. I would like to clarify that the Charleston County Aviation Authority currently has no plans, nor will there be any in the future, to extend the runways at KLRO. Our airport's geographic limitations simply make such an expansion unfeasible. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of our airport. Recently, we have made significant improvements, including resurfacing the runways and taxiways, to enhance the experience for all aircraft using our facilities for general aviation. If there are claims suggesting otherwise, it is important to recognize that they may not be based on fact and could be aimed at drawing attention to a non-existent issue. We’re excited to announce that American Airlines will be relaunching nonstop service between Charleston International Airport and New York’s LaGuardia Airport starting June 6th! With twice-weekly flights, this new service expands travel options for Charleston residents and enhances our region’s connectivity, as we continue to grow among the fastest-growing airports in the U.S. We’re looking forward to even more convenient travel choices for our passengers!
