In our pursuit of future-forward thinking, we often find ourselves recycling outdated paradigms—flying cars, Jetsonian inventions, neon-lit cityscapes. This phenomenon, known as the “used future,” refers to the adoption of established ideas and models without critical examination of their current relevance or efficacy. It’s an easy trap to fall into, and one that can limit the potential of new products or businesses or strategies long before they get built. Jennifer Lo, IDEO’s futurist-in-residence, shares five techniques for avoiding outdated visions of tomorrow: 🟥Identify emerging signals 🟥Question the framing 🟥Prototype tangible futures 🟥Create human narratives 🟥Design nascent paradigms Explore further in our latest piece: https://lnkd.in/gAs6GjMK

The #hiring continues for IDEO San Francisco - we've got postings live at two levels within our Mechanical Engineering discipline out in the Bay! Our engineers are project feasibility experts, folks who can ground IDEOers' big ideas in our core prototyping work and meticulous feasibility analysis. I'm so excited to meet talent that will sharpen concepts from the realm of blue sky ideas to production-ready designs fit for a client PDM. 🦾

Looking to design a rewarding #loyaltyprogram? Turn it into a #game customers love playing. 🎲 When IDEO Play Lab designs loyalty programs, we recognize that a brand exists at the intersection of what it says about itself and how people experience it, across hundreds of small, accumulated interactions. Done well, loyalty programs don’t just reflect a brand’s values—they embody them, shaping how people experience the brand in the countless moments that add up to brand loyalty. The best programs go beyond transactions, building ecosystems of engagement that give people agency, align with their intrinsic motivations, and evolve over time. IDEO’s Diana 周游 Tobey and Matt Hovde share three ways we could design a more sophisticated game approach to loyalty programs across three industries: retail, restaurants, and hospitality. Last week I returned from a 10 day trip in the field with a small IDEO design team. In that amount of time we were able to: - Visit 5 states and meet dozens of people living and breathing the problem space we’re designing in. - Quickly learn enough to move beyond our initial hunches and identify promising areas for design. - Build a shared team intelligence and intuition for designing with the end-user in mind. Beyond that, I’m reminded of why fieldwork is my favorite way to travel—with purpose and curiosity. I’m grateful that this line of work (design research) gives me and the teams I work with the reason to go places that we otherwise might never visit or have an appreciation for, and more importantly to get to know new people—which never fails to surprise and challenge assumptions.
