New research published in The New England Journal of Medicine highlights the promise of CRISPR-based gene-editing therapy for children ages 5-11 with severe sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia. The study's lead author, Dr. Haydar Frangoul, medical director of HCA Healthcare's Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at TriStar Centennial Medical Center, presented findings that represent an important step in evaluating whether earlier intervention may help reduce the lifelong burden of these inherited blood disorders. As a learning health system, HCA Healthcare is committed to advancing research that expands new therapies and treatment possibilities for patients facing serious and complex diseases. Across HCA Healthcare, our commitment to the care experience comes to life in moments big and small, including approximately 47 million annual patient encounters where our teams have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference beyond medical care. For 17-year-old Cesar, that opportunity became a prom celebration inside 🏥 Sunrise Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. When Cesar was hospitalized and unable to attend his prom, the care team made sure he didn’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime milestone. Colleagues transformed the hospital playroom into a prom venue filled with decorations, music, karaoke, cake and even superhero visitors — bringing the excitement of prom to Cesar. “It was really sweet that the nurses and care team did this for me,” shared Cesar. Moments like these reflect how our teams show up for patients in ways that honor the whole person. We’re grateful for HCA Healthcare colleagues who create comfort, connection and meaningful memories when it matters most. #CareLikeFamily

At HCA Healthcare, we believe excellent people make excellence happen. Across our network, military-affiliated colleagues bring service-minded leadership, resilience and experience that support our care teams. As of 2025, HCA Healthcare is proud to employ more than 18,326 military-affiliated colleagues — including Candi Stanley, a military veteran and nurse leader with more than 30 years of nursing and healthcare leadership experience. After serving as assistant chief nursing officer at Methodist Healthcare System in San Antonio, Candi recently joined Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage as chief nursing officer. Her move from Texas to Alaska reflects the value of HCA Healthcare’s connected network, where leaders can grow, collaborate and share expertise across hospitals, markets and communities. Candi brings a deep commitment to supporting caregivers and advancing high-quality, patient-centered care. We’re grateful for leaders like her who help us improve more lives in more ways across our network of 190 hospitals in 19 states and the U.K. #HCANursing #CareLikeFamily #ImproveMoreLives

At HCA Healthcare, our commitment to cancer care extends beyond the care we provide to more than 130,000 oncology patients each year through our Sarah Cannon Cancer Network. It also includes supporting programs that help cancer patients and caregivers navigate the practical and emotional challenges of treatment. Through a $240,000 grant to the American Cancer Society, the HCA Healthcare Foundation will support six Hope Lodge® locations in Charleston, Nashville, Houston, Kansas City, Salt Lake City and Tampa, helping connect people traveling for cancer treatment and their caregivers with lodging and support close to care. “Strong communities are built through partnership,” said Virginia Tenpenny, vice president of community engagement at HCA Healthcare and president of the HCA Healthcare Foundation. “We are proud to work alongside American Cancer Society Hope Lodge communities to expand access to support for individuals and families navigating cancer treatment and recovery. Through programs that provide healthy meals and other resources, we can help strengthen systems that make a meaningful difference throughout the cancer journey.” 🏠 Read how this partnership is helping the Hope Lodge create a home away from home during cancer care: https://bit.ly/4aerLyY. #HealthierTomorrows #PositiveImpact

What started as a fifth-grade career day interview between an aunt and niece became a life-saving nursing partnership years later. 💙 At HCA Healthcare’s 🏥 Lafayette Regional Health Center in Missouri, Chief Nursing Officer Kim Leakey spent more than 20 years mentoring nurses and supporting compassionate care in a rural community. One of the nurses Kim inspired is her niece, Leslyn Berg — who once interviewed “Aunt Kim” for a school project and now works as an emergency department and post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurse at the same hospital. “I have always admired Aunt Kim’s nursing knowledge. Now, as a nurse, I see even more — her compassion for patients and her commitment to mentoring others,” shared Leslyn. “We recently responded to a Code Blue together, and in that moment, we provided immediate, life-saving care. I was still able to learn from her, and it’s something I’ll always carry with me.” Their story is one of many across the HCA Healthcare network, where more than 100,000 nurses make a difference through compassion, mentorship and care every day: https://bit.ly/4xIVxG7 #HCANursing

At Methodist Healthcare System Children's Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, music therapy is helping pediatric patients find comfort, creativity and a sense of control during hospitalization. 🎵 Through the hospital’s dedicated music studio, patients can participate in recording, sound mixing and music production while working with board-certified music therapists who tailor sessions to each patient’s needs. Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based practice that can support goals such as pain management, emotional expression, developmental stimulation and family support. “There are numerous benefits to music therapy, and here in the hospital setting it helps give patients a sense of their control back,” said Emily Metcalf, music therapist at Methodist Children’s Hospital. The studio also supports Legacy Building and Memory Making projects, where therapists can incorporate a patient’s heartbeat, favorite songs, nicknames and personal stories into meaningful recordings for families. On the heels of #WorldMusicDay, we’re recognizing board-certified music therapists and specialized care teams across HCA Healthcare who meet the emotional, developmental and clinical needs of our pediatric patients and families. #WorldMusicDay #CareLikeFamily

As Father’s Day weekend approaches, HCA Healthcare patient Wayne Sharrah and his sons’ story reminds us of the powerful bond between family — and the lifesaving impact of donation. 💙 When Wayne was diagnosed with two forms of leukemia, his journey led him to the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute at 🏥 HCA HealthONE Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. After chemotherapy and CAR-T cell therapy — an advanced treatment that trains a patient's own immune system to find and fight cancer cells — a bone marrow transplant became Wayne’s best path forward. Both of Wayne’s sons were a match and ready to help. With the ability to take time away from work during the transplant, Dan stepped forward as his father’s donor. “We were going to do whatever we could to help him,” said Dan Sharrah. “It was the easiest decision I could have made.” The transplant gave Wayne a second chance at life and gave their family something especially meaningful to celebrate this Father’s Day: more time together. Wayne’s story reflects the lifesaving impact of donation and the advanced cancer care available through HCA Healthcare’s connected cancer network. Through the Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Network at Colorado Blood Cancer Institute, patients have access to one of the nation’s largest blood and marrow transplant programs, with 10 specialized programs performing more than 1,600 transplants and cellular therapies annually. A mother-daughter nursing duo at 🏥 HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital is building a family legacy of compassionate care — and showing what career growth can look like across HCA Healthcare. 💙 Michelle Shebloski and her daughter, Dani Pirkle, are nurse leaders today, but both began their healthcare careers as emergency medical technicians (EMTs). With support from HCA Healthcare and Galen College of Nursing, Dani earned her BSN through Galen’s RN to BSN program while working full-time and raising her first child. She later completed a Master of Nursing in Executive Leadership with support from HCA Healthcare’s tuition reimbursement benefits. Michelle is continuing her own educational journey and is nearing completion of her RN to BSN degree through Galen. "Don't stop educating yourself — continue on, keep going," Michelle shared. Across HCA Healthcare, we’re proud to support nurses like Michelle and Dani as they grow their careers and care for others. HCA Healthcare invests more than $50 million annually in education assistance and tuition reimbursement programs to help colleagues take the next step in their careers.
