There is an incredible amount of valuable data in manufacturing that's trapped on paper. It might be in the form of paper logs that "follow" products as they go through the steps in a production line, or it could be traceability info required for compliance checks. Wherever a facility is collecting data on paper, it's probably worth examining the cost-benefit of doing it that way. For example, are you dedicating a valuable employee's time to digging through paper volumes to perform a compliance action that takes 2 weeks but should take 20 minutes? Could digitization free up that person to pursue a project that truly adds value? Not everyone needs to be a data scientist, but you do need to understand how AI is evolving in your industry. All four "Building Smarter AI" panelists at today's Pittsburgh Technology Council & Fortyx80 Beyond Big Data AI/ML Summit rated the "importance of AI literacy" for employees on a scale of 1-10. It was 9 or 10 across the board. When it came to estimating the actual knowledge employees have about AI — it was all 3 and 4 ratings. So, we all have some work to do! Luckily, speakers at this year's summit went well beyond explaining the AI/ML tools that are out there, and spent more time diving into how they work, how they scale and what industrial companies can do with them. "When it comes to AI, you can't pass up the productivity gains." A couple other phrases that kept coming up on our AI bingo card: "garbage in garbage out" "human in the loop" "bias in the model" "transforming data into knowledge" And the AI & cybersecurity takeaway of the day goes to David Kane, who pointed to a recent CSO Online story that reported a study of LLM data leakage shows nearly 10 percent of prompts contained sensitive info like customer data. Thanks to Audrey Russo and her team, and James Gillespie and the entire PTC board of directors for hosting and supporting another terrific event that brought out hundreds from Pittsburgh's technology community. Colgate-Palmolive found there were (at least) five important steps to make sure its pet food production teams could use digital twins to improve manufacturing efficiency at Hill's Pet Nutrition. Achieving perfect results on the first try wasn't on the list. "Set initial goals that use digital twins to improve on current operations that rely largely on operator inputs, and then keep making progress from there."
