Are you a traditional press-and-sinter powdered metal parts manufacturer?   If so, you may already be producing magnetic alloys like MPIF FY-4500, more commonly known as 45P—a magnetic iron alloy with approximately 0.45% phosphorus, commonly used in applications such as magnetic damping components and sensors.   Now might be the right time to expand into the growing magnet production market though.   One thought, adding soft magnetic composites (SMCs) to your portfolio, allows for a relatively simple transition. The same compaction press and thermal processing equipment you already use can often be repurposed. This market is still finding its footing—offering meaningful opportunities for early adopters.   When it comes to sintered NdFeB (neodymium-iron-boron) magnets, the technical barriers are higher, but so are the potential rewards. While the equipment may look familiar, repurposing it isn’t always straightforward. Powder sensitivity and the need for inert atmospheres on the pressing side, along with vacuum furnaces and specialized post-processing, make this a more technical move—but not an impossible one.   And the demand? It’s growing fast. The global sintered magnet market is projected to grow at 10% CAGR from 2025 to 2035 [Core Market Research]. Here in the U.S., the momentum is real. The Department of Defense is actively investing in rare earth supply chains—from mine to magnet—to strengthen domestic production (https://lnkd.in/ebnBjmsH)   If you're already pressing powdered metal, this might be the right moment to ask: What would it take for us to step further into magnet production? I think this is a particularly valuable opportunity for folks in Elk County, Pennsylvania.    #manufacturing #NdFeB #magnets

  • Accelerating U.S. Leadership in Permanent Magnet Production – Powered by Gasbarre Magnet Presses As the global race intensifies for permanent rare earth magnets, the United States is making critical moves to reshape and reshore its supply chain. These magnets are essential to the performance of electric vehicles, wind turbines, defense systems, robotics, and advanced electronics—yet the U.S. currently imports over 90% of its rare earth magnet supply. That’s changing fast. Backed by federal initiatives, private investment, and national security priorities, the U.S. is investing heavily in domestic magnet manufacturing capabilities. But to build the magnets of tomorrow, we need the machinery to press them—right here at home. Gasbarre answers the call. As a vertically integrated, American manufacturer, Gasbarre designs, builds, and services magnet press systems from our facilities in the U.S. Our solutions are engineered specifically for rare earth materials such as neodymium (NdFeB), enabling high-performance compaction with unmatched control and repeatability. Our Magnet Press systems include: • Multiple Powder Compaction • Hermetic/Inert Enclosure for Contamination Control • Die Wall Lubrication for Better Density and Tool Life • Multi-Stage Powder Filling • Transverse or Axial Field Electromagnet Options • Integrated Electromagnet Power Supply • Specialized Punch/Die Material Assembly • High-Efficiency Servo-Hydraulic Ram Control • Hermetic Pressed Part Feed-Through Why it matters: With global demand for permanent magnets projected to exceed $36 billion by 2030, and U.S. legislation such as the Inflation Reduction Act and CHIPS and Science Act pushing domestic production, now is the time for America to lead in magnet technology. And Gasbarre is ready. We are proud to support this next generation of manufacturing with trusted, U.S.-built equipment—backed by decades of experience in powder compaction and automation. Let’s talk about your magnet pressing needs and how we can help power America’s industrial future. E-Mail: press-sales@gasbarre.com #PermanentMagnets #RareEarthMagnets #MadeInUSA #ReshoreManufacturing #EVSupplyChain #DefenseTech #AdvancedManufacturing #PowderCompaction #MagnetPress #Gasbarre #EnergyTransition #ManufacturingMatters

It certainly is not a Wooly Willy toy, but there is something oddly satisfying about watching powder dance in a reversing magnetic field. Lots of chatter in the industry following the Summer 2025 release of Metal Powder Technology and articles on NdFeB sintered magnet production. One of the best parts about working at GASBARRE is the opportunity to be on the leading edge of these emerging technologies.

What is a hydraulic stop (otherwise known as "pressing on oil") in multi-level powder compaction? In multi-level powder compaction, generally an upper cylinder (or series of cylinders) presses against a "stationary" and a series of either hydraulic or mechanical stops to densify powder material. In a hydraulic stop press, lower levels or platens have cylinders large enough to provide substantial counterforce. For example, on a 3 level lower 250T press, level 1 might have 75% of full tonnage (187T) and level 2 might have 66% (165T), with level 3 being a stationary level (i.e. full tonnage on mechanical stop). This generally works for most parts and each OEM has a different scaling on the lower levels. Many times "half tonnage" or 50% will work even. The most advanced users can take advantage of counter force compaction for higher throughputs, improved ejection characteristics for improved quality, and reduced tooling expense for lowest cost of ownership.  There are very important benefits that come with pressing against hydraulic stops, and careful design can limit any penalty, specifically speed and cost.
