EPIC Meeting at Fraunhofer HHI – 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 ⚛️🚀 Last week, Fraunhofer HHI hosted the EPIC - EUROPEAN PHOTONICS INDUSTRY CONSORTIUM Meeting in Berlin, bringing together leading experts from industry and research across Europe. Over two inspiring days, participants explored how photonics enables the next generation of quantum technologies. Key discussions focused on: 🔹 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 – from current developments to future industrial applications 🌐 🔹 𝗛𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 for industrial quantum systems 🔹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 on the path to commercialization The meeting provided a valuable platform for 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 between system developers, component suppliers, researchers, investors, and end users from across the European quantum ecosystem. Through presentations, discussions, and networking sessions, participants explored future collaboration opportunities and identified pathways to accelerate the industrialization of quantum technologies. 💬💡 A particular highlight was the opportunity to experience Fraunhofer HHI’s research environment firsthand during guided 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀, offering exclusive insights into our technology infrastructure and ongoing developments in quantum photonics. 🔬 A big thank you to EPIC - European Photonics Industry Consortium, all speakers, participants, and partners for making this event such a success. 📸 A look back at two days dedicated to technology transfer at #BMFTRDemoDays "Secure & Connected" More than 30 startups, eight incubators, numerous policymakers, investors, and industry representatives came together on June 18–19 in Berlin at Fraunhofer HHI to discuss how research-driven innovation can make its way into real-world applications. Through startup pitches and live demonstrations, teams from across Germany showcased the innovations that emerged from the two publicly funded programs, #StartUpConnect and #StartUpSecure and their eight associated incubators. In addition, through speeches and panel discussions, participants explored what needs to happen in Germany to make it easier for technologies to leave the lab and for aspiring entrepreneurs to take the leap into founding their own ventures. We're proud that several teams from our own xG-Incubator were part of the programme and showcased their technologies (airpuls GmbH, fiber-like, Massive Beams GmbH, MOXZ, Open Radio Systems, QuSine and Linque) alongside many other startups from the #StartUpSecure and #StartUpConnect initiatives. Our Immersive Media & Communications group is collaborating with High Road Stories and Berlin Phil Media GmbH for the Berlin-based research project 𝗫𝗥𝗜𝗔, which aims to develop 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗫𝗥 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 for the lifelike depiction of top musicians. Here’s how it works: XRIA is based on 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼, creating a new digital application format for 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗫𝗥 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀. Users will be able to move freely and interact within virtual spaces, while spatial audio adapts dynamically to their position. 🇰🇷 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗵𝗼𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗛𝗜. Dominic Schulz provided an overview of the work carried out in our Photonic Components and Systems (PCS) division, highlighting how photonic technologies are enabling 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 💡 The visit also included a tour of our Hybrid PIC facilities. Guided by Tianwen Qian, Adrian Emmerz and Tim-Henry Jakob, the delegation explored our advanced 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. They gained first-hand insights into the development, characterization and integration of hybrid photonic integrated circuits. The discussions reflected the 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 exchange in driving innovation and bringing new technologies from research into practical applications. ✨ European Society of Thin Films (𝗘𝗙𝗗𝗦) 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽: 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂! ✨ We are proud to have hosted the EFDS workshop on Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) and Thin-Film Processes at Fraunhofer HHI! Thank you to all participants for sharing insights that advance scalable PIC technologies, design-for-manufacturability, and the integration of thin-film processes into robust, industry-ready architectures.
