⚡ Rhizome is helping utilities answer one of the hardest questions in climate adaptation: how do you put a price on resilience? Led by CEO Mishal Thadani, portfolio company, Rhizome, just released a new report with the Smart Electric Power Alliance titled “Resilient by Design: Utility Strategies for Climate-Ready Distribution Systems.” The report examines how 17 utilities across the U.S. are planning for wildfire risk, outages, and extreme weather — and what it will take to close a $500B resilience funding gap. “[With] a blank check, you could make a bulletproof system… but affordability is becoming increasingly important,” Mishal told Latitude Media. “Utilities are trying to make sure that they implement resilience practices that are worth the money, because protecting their communities is just as important as making sure that those communities’ bills don’t go up too much.” Other utilities and leaders mentioned include Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Entergy, Consumers Energy, and SEPA’s Mac Keller, all wrestling with the same challenge: proving that investments like emergency microgrids or remote grids are worth the cost before the next disaster hits.
