Career opportunities at the world's most productive astronomical observatory.
About us
ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and is supported by 16 member-states along with the host state of Chile and with Australia as a Strategic Partner. ESO's main mission, laid down in the 1962 Convention, is to provide state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and astrophysicists, allowing them to conduct front-line science in the best conditions. By building and operating a suite of the world's most powerful ground-based astronomical telescopes enabling important scientific discoveries, ESO offers numerous possibilities for technology spin-off and transfer, together with high technology contract opportunities and is a dramatic showcase for European industry. Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three unique observing sites in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor.

Using our Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers have discovered extremely powerful winds pummelling the equator of the giant gas exoplanet WASP-127b, 500 light-years away. Reaching speeds up to 33 000 km/h, the winds make up the fastest jetstream of its kind ever measured on a planet. In comparison, the fastest wind ever measured in the Solar System was found on Neptune, moving at 1800 km/h. New laser-sharp vision for Paranal’s facilities! Taken at our Headquarters in Germany, this image shows the first of nine new lasers that are being built for two of our Paranal Observatory facilities, in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Three of these lasers are part of the GRAVITY+ upgrade to the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), while the remaining six will be installed on the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction not far from the VLTI. These lasers are part of the telescopes’ adaptive optics system. This cancels out the blurring effect caused by turbulence in the atmosphere, allowing the telescopes to deliver much sharper images. The laser projection systems are being built in the Netherlands, and the first one has now successfully passed a review by our engineers. The ESO-Government of Chile Regional Joint Committee has announced the eleven winning projects for the 2024 call, focusing on culture, education, and the protection of the pristine skies of northern Chile. With a total investment of 186 million CLP (about 180,000 €), these initiatives aim to promote astronomy as a tool for development in the regions of Coquimbo and Antofagasta, home to our La Silla and Paranal observatories, as well as the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) currently under construction. Among the highlighted projects are initiatives aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of Chile’s new light pollution regulation; preserving astronomical heritage; promoting education through activities such as science and technology camps for girls; and sessions on both ancestral and modern astronomy for local communities. Congratulations to all the winning teams for their contributions to the north of Chile development and the preservation of the dark and unique skies! The skies of Chile’s Atacama Desert, renowned as the darkest and clearest of the world, are now at risk from an industrial megaproject. Electricity company AES Andes proposed to locate a large-scale industrial complex just a few kilometres away from our Paranal Observatory. If constructed, the resulting dust emissions, increased atmospheric turbulence, and especially light pollution, would irreparably impact the capabilities for astronomical observation We urge the involved parties, specifically AES Andes, to work with the Government of Chile to relocate this megaproject to a zone compatible with industrial development without jeopardising the skies of Paranal.
