A not so surprising newsflash: The healthcare experience—for patients, clinicians, and admins—has a ton of friction points that need attention. After analyzing data, reviewing provider feedback, and sifting through patient surveys, Jennifer Zellinger's team partnered with Highmark Health and Allegheny Health Network to elevate the authorization process. We started by asking three big questions: How can we bring more transparency, speed, and accuracy to authorizations? How can we reduce administrative burden for health plans and providers? In particular, how can we help clinicians focus on spending more time with patients? How can we build automated workflows and solutions that naturally align with regulations? With a solid understanding of the major pain points, we got to work on creating an automated integration that's already making waves. There’s one huge advantage of being a payvider in healthcare. We get the opportunity to see industry challenges from multiple perspectives. Provider feedback, patient surveys, and platform data work together to uncover areas of improvement. In collaboration with Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health, Jennifer Zellinger's team started mapping the authorization experience. The resulting update? One deceptively simple automation (and a super sophisticated backend integration) is now improving the auth experience for everyone. That means faster patient care, more time back for clinicians, and lower admin costs for payers. And although it’s still early days, we’ve already seen a 6% jump in automated approvals. In 2024, we launched an automation pilot in partnership with Allegheny Health Network that's been shown to lower auth submission time from 8.6 minutes to 10 seconds. Yes, we feel like that's something to celebrate, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. We chatted with our VP of Product Development & Management Jennifer Zellinger to uncover the real value. Everyone in health tech knows that AI is table-stakes. But what isn’t so clear is how to harness it. Not to mention your entire AI strategy, from conception to launch, can become null and void in the span of 6 months. Tej Daruwalla’s advice? Start by building an organizational framework that identifies specific challenges (like operational inefficiencies). In other words, don’t just “do AI.” At enGen, that framework has a name. We call it the “AI Foundry.” It’s our way of building a valuable backlog of AI use-cases intended to drive real ROI and client outcomes.
