New Town High School students had an opportunity to engage and explore careers in biotechnology through EmpowerBio. This event organized by Ms. Kathryn Duncan engaged over 50 students, featuring hands-on activities, guest speakers, and insights into various career pathways in the field. Amrita Madabushi, the founder of EmpowerBio, led the session, sharing her inspiring journey and the variety of careers available in biotechnology and bioscience field. She facilitated a hands-on activity that involved building nucleotide models and also fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills. The session featured two distinguished guest speakers: Da'Kuawn Johnson, a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, shared his academic journey, emphasizing the importance of embracing boldness and exploring unconventional career paths. He encouraged students to be open-minded and to carve their own unique trajectories in the biotech field. Allison Bernard, an R&D Cell Biologist at Thermo Fisher Scientific and an alumna of New Town High School, reflected on her experience of being in their shoes just nine years ago. She discussed her decision to change majors and the rewarding aspects of her current role, reassuring students that career shifts are natural and can lead to fulfilling opportunities. Woodlawn High School recently celebrated its commitment to STEM education with an inspiring White Coat Ceremony for #PLTW Biomedical students and a Poster Presentation event. Congratulations to Science Dept. Chair, Ms. Asha R. and teachers on organizing an excellent morning of celebration. A keynote address by Dr. Amrita Madabushi, founder of EmpowerBio and a biotechnology professor set an inspiring tone for the day. She encouraged students to explore, persist, and find success in their unique career journeys.
