Observability and context allowed us to basically quantify what matters. And when things get bad, we know why it got bad. And when things improved, we know what the long-term effects of it is. If you don’t measure it, you don’t actually know what’s going on. And observability and instrumentation in general allows us to answer questions about things that we may not have originally formulated. So that’s when I saw it and when I saw what it could do. Embrace's recent "In love with OTel and observability" panel with Daniel Gomez Blanco, Marylia Gutierrez, Hazel Weakly, Adriana Villela, and Hanson Ho was a blast! *SLOs* - Friday reading. While many SREs measure SLAs (and they should), latency and uptime are correlaries and not directly causal to business impact. SLOs are the key: 1) KPIs (SLOs) should drive user engagement and revenue (or whatever is important to your biz) 2) Common Language - provide a common KPI across teams because they are measures that client, backend, and SREs can rally around. Even PMs! 3) Workflow - remove isolation between teams and disparate tools. Common measures force better workflows to identify, find and resolve.
