Updates

  • Elevate Energy Consulting is thrilled to have played a small part in supporting The AES Corporation to test the #PSCAD models for these new hybrid resources to meet the Hawaiian Electric interconnection requirements. The battery energy storage system (#BESS) components are grid-forming, which adds to the excitement for these projects. Congrats to #AES and #HECO for their hard work and diligence integrating high levels of inverter-based resources (#IBR) while ensuring high levels of islanded grid reliability!

Today, we continued to accelerate progress toward Hawaii’s energy goals by signing two new contracts for solar and energy storage projects that will help control energy costs and maintain reliable electric service. “More renewable energy is good news for our customers. We reached new highs for renewable energy in 2024 and these projects show we’re continuing to build on that momentum,” said Rebecca Dayhuff-Matsushima, Hawaiian Electric vice president, resource procurement. The projects by renewable energy developer AES, are: • Kuihelani Solar Phase 2, a 40-megawatt (MW) solar and 160 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery storage project on Maui, expected to be in service in 2027. • Keamuku Solar, an 86-MW solar and 344 MWh battery storage project on Hawaii Island, expected to be in service in 2030. Both contracts are for a term of 25 years and must be reviewed and approved by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission. We achieved a 36% consolidated renewable portfolio standard (RPS) in 2024, largely due to new grid-scale and rooftop solar capacity, accelerating progress toward the 2030 RPS milestone of 40%. Our consolidated RPS shows the percentage of electricity for Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui County generated by renewable resources. This represents a mix of geothermal, biomass, hydro, wind, biofuels and solar, including 114,000 rooftop solar systems. In 2025, we expect to further increase renewable generation and battery energy storage on Oahu and Hawaii Island and add thousands of rooftop solar systems on all islands. More information about renewable energy projects in negotiation and development can be found on our Renewable Project Status Board: https://lnkd.in/g25UXzw Photo credit: AES Hawai'i

ERCOT NOGRR 245 activities are in full force and the Elevate Energy Consulting 🏔️ team is tirelessly working on assessing the ride-through capabilities of over 50+ plants in Texas! This is no small feat - it requires ongoing collaboration with the OEMs, IBR unit-level assessments, balance of plant relay assessments, PSCAD simulations, and deep understanding of IBR dynamics and controls. I'm extremely impressed with the focus, attention to detail, technical rigor, and dedication the #Elevate team has put in thus far to "get this right" to maximize IBR ride-through capabilities across multiple Resource Entities' fleets to meet the impending April 1 deadlines. ⚡ ERCOT released the updated DocuSign today with final details on materials that must be provided by April 1. ⚡ The packet also included templates for the IVRTCR and IFRTCR reports that must be submitted for any exemptions and extensions. ⚡ The packet also included an FAQ with additional details and answers to questions. ⚡ ERCOT also issued a Market Notice with the details and instruction for submittal. ⚡ The workshop previously scheduled for Feb 26 was postponed to March 10, leaving only 3 weeks between that final workshop and the April 1 deadline. ⚡ Careful attention to modeling (PSCAD, PSSE, TSAT) is needed to meet the obligations. Elevate Energy Consulting has developed a software-enabled workflow for effectively managing all these sites and their documentation, and working collaboratively with our clients. Kudos to all our clients who are working collaboratively with us on this innovative way of transforming how we do business more effectively and efficiently. 🙌 #Elevate #Grid💪 #Innovate #Uplift #Transform Market Notice: https://lnkd.in/g8v4x_AJ 📞 If you need to "phone a friend", feel free to reach out to me or Farhad Yahyaie and we'd be happy to provide support!

  • 📣 Grid Forming (#GFM) in the News! Salt River Project recently released a Business Practice on Grid Forming (#GFM) Battery Energy Storage System (#BESS) Specification and Simulation Test Procedures, effective February 14, 2025. 🔹The Business Practice emphasizes the rapid growth of inverter-based resources (#IBR) that SRP is experiencing, and recognizes the need to maintain high levels of grid stability and reliability. 🔹#SRP is "adopting #GFM technology for #BESS on a case-by-case basis” and the Business Practice serves as the technical requirements for SRP to test performance against for applicable interconnections. 🔹The Business Practice applies to “to any standalone BESS or the BESS component of a co-located facility where SRP specifies that the BESS shall operate in GFM mode.” 🔹The functional specification mirrors the #NERC specification closely and the simulation test procedures are a simplified version of the NERC tests, using one test system and simulation test with pass/fail criteria defined. 🔹IBRs are expected to meet other SRP IBR performance specifications and allows for exemptions requested by the interconnection customer for any challenges meeting those requirements (considering that SRP has adopted many parts of IEEE 2800-2022 already), allowing flexibility and reasonableness to the interconnection process. 🔹SRP will review the submitted GFM #model and accompanying simulation test report to ensure all pass/fail criteria are met. Interconnection customers can resubmit models and simulation test reports to address any issues identified. 📈 This is a major milestone in the path toward GFM adoption, particularly in a region expecting very high instantaneous IBR penetration within the decade.   Source: https://lnkd.in/gVTY9JQN

Anyone out there responsible for or working on ERCOT NOGRR 255 "High Resolution Data Requirements"? Elevate Energy Consulting 🏔️ is doing some work in this area to ensure Resource Entities have disturbance monitoring capabilities that comply with the requirements set forth - sequence of events recording, digital fault recording, dynamic disturbance recording, retention and reporting requirements, location selection, equipment selection, configuring triggers and measurements, etc. 💻 We have a streamlined process for assessing sites in terms of disturbance monitoring capability, determining possible gaps, and identifying effective ways to leverage existing infrastructure and equipment to meet the requirements. ⌛ Partial compliance was required December 2024 and full compliance is required by December 2025. 🛠️ These efforts are very similar in nature to the upcoming #NERC PRC-028 requirements and we can support in this area as well.
