As a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist, I care for hundreds of pregnancies achieved through in vitro fertilization (IVF). One of the most common challenges I hear from my patients is the financial burden of IVF. In my own practice, I have heard stories over an over again in last 20 years when many couples have had to sell their homes, take out second mortgages, or drain their savings just to afford IVF treatment so they can have a baby. Here are some facts above IVF. ▶️ While obstetric care during pregnancy is covered by most insurance plans, IVF which can cost up to $40,000 in metropolitan areas is often not. This is a significant barrier for many young families hoping to have a baby when they are trying to manage cost of living and starting a family. ▶️ One in ten women now starts their family after age 35, when fertility naturally declines. With more women delaying childbearing, infertility is becoming increasingly common and so is the need for IVF. ▶️ Couples with genetic conditions such as spinal muscular atrophy, sickle cell disease, or cystic fibrosis - where the risk of having an affected baby is 1 in 4, if both parents are carriers. IVF with preimplantation genetic analysis (biopsy of embryonic cells) can prevent these devastating conditions, giving families the chance to have a healthy child. The ability to build a family should not be limited by financial hardship. Expanding insurance coverage for IVF is essential, not only for those struggling with infertility but also for couples facing serious genetic risks. It’s time to make IVF more accessible and affordable for those who need it. Ekom Consulting #IVF #InfertilityAwareness #MaternalFetalMedicine #ReproductiveHealth #GeneticTesting #HealthcareAccess
