"Blind spot" is one of those phrases I used constantly without thinking twice. But then, someone with a disability pointed out its ableist undertones, and suddenly, it clicked. And let me tell you, I felt like this emoji: 🤦♀️ . Of course, it’s ableist. But because it was so ingrained in everyday language, I never questioned it. This is exactly why having diverse voices in the room is so important. It pushes us to be more thoughtful about the words we use and the messages we send—without realizing it. When we say "blind spot," we’re unintentionally linking blindness with weakness or vulnerability, reinforcing stereotypes we never meant to perpetuate. Luckily, it’s an easy fix. Here are some alternatives to swap in instead 👇 Hidden risk Unseen gap Knowledge gap Security gap Oversight area Missed exposure Unknown risk Unmonitored zone Under-the-radar issue Visibility gap Missed piece Hidden trouble Foggy area Out of view Slipped through the cracks Off the radar Unnoticed gap Missed connection Behind-the-scenes risk The words we use matter, and small language shifts like this help make communication more inclusive for everyone. #Writing #Copywriting #ContentMarketing #DEI #DiversityEquityInclusion #Ableism
