⭐ Meet Tatum—an adventurous teen who loves lacrosse, soccer, and living life to the fullest. Last spring, Tatum’s world changed in an instant when she was thrown from an ATV while riding on a family farm. Despite always being careful, a sudden turn of events left her with serious injuries, including fractures to her spine and pelvis. ❗ But one thing saved her life: her helmet. Tatum’s helmet took the brunt of the impact, cracking from the force—but protecting her brain. Her doctors, nurses, and the trauma team at Dayton Children’s Hospital credit that helmet with preventing a devastating brain injury. Today, Tatum is back on the field, stronger than ever—and sharing her story to inspire others to put safety first! 🧠 March is brain injury awareness month. Did you know that Dayton Children's sees around 700 kids each year due to injuries on ATV’s bikes, scooters, skateboards and other wheeled activities? We want to see every child be safe while enjoying outdoor activities. Take a moment this month to share this story and remind your friends and family to wear your helmet! Every ride. Every time. 🚲 To learn more about safety on wheeled vehicles check out our "This is how we roll" materials at https://lnkd.in/eeb3xifa

🐾 Have you seen Lincoln, the Great Dane, around the hospital with his owner and Dayton Children's pet therapy volunteer, Dr. Raphael Allen, PhD?🐾 While Lincoln is loved by many, his massive presence at Dayton Children's is more than just a friendly visit—it’s a powerful reminder of the strength of community. “I always wanted Lincoln to not only help me but to help me serve others too,” shares Raphael. Black History Month is a time to reflect on the power of community and connection, and Raphael embodies that spirit every time he walks through our doors. "When you do things from the heart, it affects hearts. That's a quote from an African-American musical artist that has always rang true to me." And, as a cancer survivor, Raphael shares a special bond with our patients at the hospital. “When I was going through my cancer journey, people would ask how I coped, and I would tell them—going to Dayton Children’s was a way that I was able to lift my spirits." 💙 We appreciate Raphael and Lincoln for showing up—because they know that sometimes, the greatest way to make history is to simply be there for those who need it most. Do you also want to show up and make an impact? You can join Raphael, Lincoln, and our incredible volunteer team in bringing community, connection, and care to families at Dayton Children's. At just 11 weeks old, Violet’s parents noticed unusual movements from their daughter that led them to the emergency department at Dayton Children’s. After extensive testing, she was diagnosed with Aicardi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects brain development, vision, and causes seizures. When it mattered most, Violet’s family turned to her trusted care team for answers. Neurologist, Dr. Debra O’Donnell, not only understood Aicardi Syndrome but had also cared for other children with the same condition. With her guidance and the support of a dedicated team, Violet began treatment to manage her seizures and started therapy to help with her development. ✨ "With the support from Dayton Children's and our family, we quickly turned our grief into focus and started to identify what was within- our control and putting everything in place to set Violet up for success after her discharge," says Elizabeth, Violet's mom. ✨ Today, Violet continues to make incredible progress through outpatient therapy with neurology, developmental pediatrics, physical medicine, and ophthalmology specialists. Every milestone she reaches is a testament to her resilience, her family’s strength, and the compassionate care at Dayton Children’s. In October 2023 Riley broke his femur bone which led him to physical therapy at Dayton Children's. During his appointments his physical therapist, Sam, noticed some physical attributes that had nothing to do with a broken leg. 💜 "Sam went above and beyond and consulted with other therapists and ultimately recommended I take Riley for a neuro evaluation in the ED," says Riley's mom. It was during that evaluation that Riley‘s diagnosis of baslar invagination and brain stem compression was found which led to neurosurgeon, Dr. Kamian, correcting the compression with a spinal fusion. "I am so grateful for every person that went above and beyond to care for my son! All staff was supportive, knowledgeable, and caring. I am so grateful to Dayton Children’s for saving my sons life and providing compassionate care!" Today, Riley is doing great! He is able to play baseball again and is doing great in school. Before his diagnosis his gross and fine motor skills were decreasing but now he is now doing great and his motor skills are at a typical baseline. #MyDaytonChildrensKid #aboveandbeyond4kids 🌟 Do you have a photo or video of your kid at Dayton Children's?
