DCD is also the producer of the annual the Encore! Dance Hall of Fame gala. The hall honours and celebrates dynamic lifelong contributions to dance in Canada by some remarkable individuals. • It seems like yesterday. Here’s recent Hall of Fame Inductee Christopher House talking about the vibrant dance scene in the 1980s. Capturing, sharing, and illuminating these stories is at the heart of what we do at Dance Collection Danse. Be part of our mission to tell the story of Canadian dance. Even a small amount goes a long way. https://lnkd.in/ep6jVDGz ⭐ Donate Here: https://lnkd.in/eca79Bsu

  • Dance Collection Danse is pleased to announce Josh Murphy as the 2025/26 Artist Researcher-in-Residence. Josh’s research will explore burlesque history in Canada and will inform his artistic practice and future choreographic work. Josh Murphy is a dance/burlesque artist based in Toronto. Murphy earned his BFA in Dance from York University. In 2017, Murphy began performing burlesque as “Newfound Lad” and has toured nationally and internationally both solo and with BoylesqueTO, Canada’s Premiere Boylesque troupe. Murphy, along with Paige Sayles through their company S/M Movement, works to merge burlesque and contemporary dance practices. Their full length duet (un)Done had its world premiere Fall 2024 as a part of Neighbourhood Dance Works 33rd Festival of New Dance. Recently, Murphy and Sayles showcased an excerpt of (un)Done at the Burlesque Hall of Fame (BHOF) weekender in Las Vegas. Murphy also competed as a soloist for “Best Debut”, the second Newfoundlander to do so in the history of the weekender. Select artistic credits include touring "Ruralesque" with Candice Pike and Hilary Knee (2022-Present) and Assistant Movement Directing, under Christopher House, for Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland's "I Forgive You", directed by Jillian Keiley as presented at the NAC in 2023. For the last 4 years, Murphy has produced and curated "An Evening of Odditease" for The Festival of New Dance in St. John’s, NL. Murphy is also one of the founding board members for the Atlantic Burlesque Festival in Halifax, NS.

  • We love 𝗡𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝘀. She began studying dance at age seven with Betty Oliphant and went on to train at Canada’s National Ballet School. In 1966, at age 18, she joined The National Ballet of Canada and, three years later was promoted to principal dancer, a position she held for the next 17 years. Nadia toured extensively, both with the National Ballet and as a guest artist throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. She was partnered by many of the most renowned dancers of her time including Rudolf Nureyev, Erik Bruhn, Peter Martins, Anthony Dowell, Fernando Bujones, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, who chose her to dance in his debut of Erik Bruhn’s Swan Lake. After retiring from the stage, Nadia launched into a full-time teaching career and in 1989 became a professor and director of the Dance Program at Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University), a position she held for 24 years. • It was an absolute delight to sit down and listen to the stories of the charismatic Joey Hollingsworth. A groundbreaking Black Canadian tap dancer, Hollingsworth swings fast and smooth. Born in 1936, raised in London, Ontario, he danced on variety, medicine and minstrel shows early on. At 10 years old, he tapped with legendary Bill BoJangles Robinson and witnessed tap greats Teddy Hale and Peg Leg Bates. His tap embodies Afro-diasporic rhythm and soul from his grandpa Huskey Henderson, railway porters, jazz drummers, and Black tappers. He calls it dancing into the wood. Joey tapped low into the boards with paddle and roll, slides, glides, jazz licks, and independence. • It was a pleasure to sit down with the accomplished 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶, 𝗖.𝗠., 𝗗.𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁. (𝗵.𝗰.). A performer of acclaim in both Canada and abroad, Moroni is also founder of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division. He has dedicated the majority of his life’s work to the education of dancers, and his dance legacy encompasses his work behind the scenes where he taught, coached and nurtured generations of dance artists at the Winnipeg school.  To watch the interview: https://lnkd.in/eYF5kKwA

  • Today, we offer this interview with the mercurial 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝗢.𝗖., 𝗖.𝗤. A Québec-born dance artist, Chouinard travelled the world as a soloist for 12 years before founding COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD in 1990. Her works, with their avant-garde signature, are enduring and appear in the repertoires of major international dance companies. After studying ballet in Montréal, Marie abandoned formal instruction to follow her own path, becoming known as the “enfant terrible” of Québec dance, soon building a worldwide reputation for her iconoclastic work. She is a director of film and virtual reality works; an author; and a visual artist in photography, drawings, and installations. She creates choreographies for site-specific works and in real-time for the web. To view her interview visit: https://lnkd.in/erD4zx2A
