What happens when you work with national brands and local stakeholders to eliminate single-use cups? In just 12 weeks in Petaluma, CA, over 220,000 reusable cups were successfully returned, demonstrating an ambitious, innovative vision of reuse as an everyday reality, and paving the way for the #NextGen Consortium to scale reuse in California and other markets. Research from Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy shows that with the right infrastructure, businesses and cities can help keep valuable materials in circulation. Municipalities play a critical role in supporting a circular economy for organics, and they need support and resources to succeed. The City of Lakewood has robust plans to advance organics recovery in its community—from compost collection services for multi-family complexes, to piloting a zero waste school program. Zero waste officials around the country are using the Composting Consortium’s Municipal Blueprint as a manual for building and scaling organics programs in their communities. [NEW REPORT] The results are in! Today, the #NextGen Consortium, led by Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy, with partners including Starbucks, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Yum! Brands and other global businesses released groundbreaking results from the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project, the first initiative to catalyze reuse across an entire U.S. city. The report reveals a major milestone for the reuse movement: enough of the project’s purple cups were successfully returned for the reuse system to produce environmental benefits when compared with a single-use alternative. Throughout the duration of the 3-month project, 30 businesses in Petaluma––from national brands to local restaurants––switched out single-use cups for reusable alternatives in unison, at no cost to the customer. Local consumers responded, returning cups from day one, with returns climbing rapidly in the first few weeks and over 220,000 cups returned throughout the program! What does it take to make reuse an everyday reality in America? Did you know that food waste makes up nearly a quarter of municipal solid waste in landfills? With thoughtfully designed organics programs, municipalities can reduce their waste and move closer to achieving their zero waste goals. The #CompostingConsortium, managed by Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy, is dedicated to helping municipalities reach this vision. Read more about our clear and actionable framework for how to develop local policy, create the right infrastructure and engage community to scale organics collection programs in the Consortium's Municipal Blueprint Report, co-authored with Eco-Cycle: https://hubs.la/Q037CXmd0 #circulareconomy #compost #composting #foodwaste #organics #infastructure #municipality

[NEW REPORT] Every year, billions of products—beauty items, medications, and food—are packaged in small plastics that are often considered “unrecyclable” under current systems. Due to their size, they slip through sorting systems and end up in landfills. These materials may seem insignificant, but they hold untapped economic and environmental value. The Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners today unveils major pioneering findings in a new report on small-format plastic packaging recovery, revealing a viable pathway to recover tens of thousands of tons of valuable small materials from materials recovery facilities and glass recycling plants across the U.S. The report builds on over two years of market research and comprehensive recycling tests in partnership with Maybelline New York and its parent company, L'Oréal Groupe, bolstered by the support of additional partners Kraft Heinz, Procter & Gamble and Target. Glacial Ridge Composting Facility is a regional multi-county composting operation in Minnesota, owned and operated by Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management. In 2017, they rolled out an organics collection pilot in response to a growing amount of food in the municipal waste stream. Today, the pilot has grown to include several regional counties and a full-scale commercial composting facility which opened in 2022. Read an exclusive interview from the #CompostingConsortium, managed by Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy, for insights on food and certified compostable packaging acceptance from Nathan Reinbold, Environmental Program Manager at Pope/Douglas: https://hubs.la/Q0375WKB0 #circulareconomy #compost #composting #compostablepackaging #food #innovation #collaboration

More solar panels are reaching their end-of-life following the rapid growth of solar energy. By 2030, an expected 1 million metric tons will need to be recycled. By 2050, that is anticipated to spiral to tenfold in the U.S. alone. Our portfolio company, SOLARCYCLE, is among a few innovators making headway on solar panel recycling. Today, the company runs an R&D recycling plant to test cutting-edge recycling technologies, and a Texas plant ramping up to process over one million panels a year (50 million pounds). A third facility, planned for Georgia, will initially do twice that volume and be able to process 10 million panels a year in time.
