Updates

  • Our hard-working team are represented (by the goose, of course) wherever they go!

I was happy to be shown around West Ashley’s food forest in Mulberry Park yesterday by some of the locals (seen below). The City of Goose Creek was recently awarded a grant to develop a municipal food forest thanks to the hard work of my fellow planner Emma Hall. Looking forward to seeing the City’s food system resiliency take off!

  • She was a native of Goose Creek, and a trailblazer whose life of service and accomplishment serves as an inspiration. Nancy Leftenant-Colon was the first African American woman to serve as a registered nurse in the U.S. Military, after volunteering and being accepted into the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1945. She was the first and only woman to serve as President of the Tuskegee Airmen. And in 2007, she received the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush. Mrs. Leftenant-Colon was born on Sept. 29, 1920, in Goose Creek, and passed away at the age of 104 early this year in Amityville, NY. Curious about the construction going on on the corner of S. Goose Creek Blvd/Hwy 52 and St James Ave? Carolina Avenue is a new 36,000+- sq ft commercial development coming to Goose Creek next to one of the busiest intersections in Berkeley County with 90,000+ cars a day passing by. Space is still available and potential incentives may be available for full service restaurants or breweries. Reach out if you are interested! #creekrising #Grescon #LFKArchitect

  • JaCarie Jones was a young child when he learned firsthand about the profession that would change his life. A police officer that patrolled JaCarie’s neighborhood in Houston, Texas, always took time to talk to the youngster. “I would visit with him while he was on patrol,” JaCarie said. “We would talk, and he would tell me about his job. I used to sit with him while he was doing extra patrols, and he’d show me how to work all the stuff in his car. That was the start. Ever since that interaction, I wanted to be a police officer. It was set in stone.” Those life-changing visits with the Houston officer are never far from the mind of Goose Creek Police Officer JaCarie Jones. He joined the Goose Creek Police Department last year shortly after moving from Texas to his wife’s home state of South Carolina. “I’m big on community outreach,” he said. “That’s one of the most important things we can do on this job – get out and talk to people in the community. It starts with a conversation. Let them see your face and hear your voice.” Community outreach has been a hallmark of GCPD Chief LJ Roscoe’s department, and Officer Jones knows that he has found the right place for him. • #CreekArt today, tomorrow, and forever! The arts are truly blossoming in Goose Creek in 2025, and construction on the City’s new Creek Collective arts building is nearly complete! The new structure at the corner of St. James Avenue and Old Moncks Corner Road will be dedicated to the cultural arts. 🖊️ On Thursday, a host of artists (who have contributed art to the City), Recreation leaders and City officials gathered at the construction site to write inspiring messages on the building’s support studs. The messages and signatures are a unique addition to the building designed in honor of the beloved Wedding and Prayer Chapel that called the corner lot home for decades. 🎨 One of the messages was from Goose Creek Mayor Greg Habib: “We don’t talk about art in Goose Creek … we create it.” 👀 Stay tuned for more updates as this beautiful new addition to the City landscape nears completion. The Creek Collective is scheduled to open in May. #CreekArt #GooseCreekSC #creekrising

  • Few leaders played a more significant role in Goose Creek’s history than John McCants. Mr. McCants, who passed away in 2017, was the first African-American to be elected to Goose Creek City Council, where he served from 1992 to 2016. His steady leadership on Council came during a time of transformation for the City and region. His time in office was but one chapter of a life dedicated to serving others. A U.S. Army Veteran, Mr. McCants spent decades as a liaison between low-income families and their local government. His many volunteer efforts included serving the United Methodist Relief Agency, Charleston Area Senior Citizens, and the Berkeley-Dorchester Economic Development Board. John McCants Veterans Park opened in 2021 and will forever be a testament to his character and lifetime of service. The park is located at 355 Anita Drive. As we celebrate Black History Month, we are grateful for everything John McCants did for Goose Creek. #GooseCreekSC #CreekRising #BlackHistoryMonth
