About us
The Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI) engages a broad coalition of providers, payers, patient advocates, scientists, researchers, and others who are dedicated to preserving innovation and enhancing value across the healthcare system. IVI works to create common approaches for relevant, rigorous, and transparent value assessments in healthcare by identifying, supporting, and disseminating best practices. IVI is founded in belief that an informed and dispassionate dialogue around value assessment is essential to the future vitality of the American healthcare system. We hope to fuel that dialogue with timely, non-biased, and well-focused research, evidence, and analysis.

Today, on National Caregivers Day, we honor the millions of family caregivers. Take a moment to reach out to a caregiver in your life—a coworker, a neighbor, a family member, or a friend. Caregivers are all around us, yet they go unseen. This unseen force selflessly dedicates their time, energy, and love to supporting others, often putting their own needs aside. At the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, we believe it’s time to reflect on how to better support them. Caregivers play a critical role in rare disease management, yet their experiences are often overlooked in research and policy. In our latest commentary, Dominique Seo, MPH (Health Equity Fellow, the Center). Gloria Rodriguez, MPH, Health Equity Coordinator, Dravet Syndrome Foundation), and Yuan-Yuan Michelle Cheng, MHS (Research Manager, the Center) highlight the financial, emotional, and social burdens caregivers face and the need to integrate their perspectives into healthcare decision-making. At the Center for Innovation & Value Research, our Rare Disease Project explores ways to incorporate caregiver experiences into comparative effectiveness research and health technology assessment. Gloria Rodriguez’s journey as a caregiver for her daughter Grace, who has Dravet Syndrome, underscores the need for stronger support systems and policies that recognize caregiver contributions. Caregiving for an adult can be challenging, both financially and emotionally. Many caregivers face elevated rates of depression and anxiety and even see declines in their health. And the costs add up—caregivers often spend around a quarter of their income on out-of-pocket expenses. But for some, the price is even higher. Research has revealed a hidden segment of caregivers who risk their stability, sometimes leading to homelessness. Black men are an often-overlooked group shouldering this responsibility. While caregiving can be rewarding, it also comes with significant challenges.
