On Wednesday, February 26, the Center hosted a captivating panel, "The Digital Makeover of Fashion Law," where students, faculty, staff, and alumni delved into the legal implications of emerging technologies in the fashion industry. Moderated by Nanaki Dhesi and Chika Amene, the event showcased insightful discussions led by three distinguished panelists: 💄 Emilie Lavirotte of Sephora 🎨 Jordan Hameen of Perkins Coie LLP 👖 Zachary TOCZYŃSKI of Levi Strauss & Co. Key insights and takeaways include: ⚙️ How AI can be useful for trademark registrations and clearances. 🖥️ Looking at AI not just from the copyright perspective, but also for the risks AI can pose to existing trademarks. 🧑⚖️ Despite diverse industry representation, our panelists agree on three things: No two days ever look the same, there is no shortage of need for their positions, and the fashion & beauty industries are at the forefront of emerging technologies. Special thanks to Levi Strauss & Co., #FashionLaw, Intellectual Property and Technology Law Journal, and #BusinessLawAssociation for their collaboration in making this event such a success. Interested in the convergence of fashion, IP, and technology? Stay tuned for the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Journal's curated issue in late spring, focusing on these compelling topics. Great to see this publication about #blockchain, #inclusion, and #ESG in Brazil from the Center for Law, Tech, and Social Good's Affiliated Scholar Thiago Amparo and Paola Mineiro in the USF Law Review Forum! Thank you Kaitlin Donovan and Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web for supporting our International Affiliated Scholars Program. 🌎
Ever wondered how blockchain technology can play a role in advancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)? In their insightful article, "Blockchain, Inclusion, and ESG: Lessons from Initiatives in Brazil," two talented authors explore how blockchain initiatives in Brazil are driving social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and governance improvements. Over the past several months, I had the pleasure of working with Paola Mineiro and Thiago Amparo, who have been at the forefront of observing and researching the evolving uses of blockchain. Their work sheds light on the powerful intersection of technology and social responsibility. Check out the full article on the USF Law Review Forum:

This Friday, the Center wants to highlight our amazing Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web Teaching Fellow, 🌟 Charles Belle 🌟 Like many people, Charles is a huge fan of digital art and online art communities all built around NFTs. His office has a variety of digital art and Web3 collectibles. Still, Charles always asks the question: how do we balance creators' rights with community ownership in the age of NFTs? Despite the industry being worth $70B, the digital art marketplace lacks clear rules for community decision-making. The current legal tools we use, mostly IP licenses, for managing digital rights were not built for community-owned projects. As a result, recent attempts to create standard rules for these projects haven't caught on, leaving both creators and buyers uncertain about their rights. One of Charles' research projects examines digital art collections (PFP Projects) where thousands of people buy unique digital avatars to join online communities. If you are unfamiliar with PFPs, think of it like buying into an exclusive club, but one where the rules about what members can do with their digital art aren't always clear. Highlighting Moonbirds (a popular digital art project), Charles show his students how unclear rules create confusion between artists and their communities, potentially holding back innovation in this growing space. Charles hopes that this work will shape better practices and rules that work for both digital artists and the communities that form around their art. Full research forthcoming. #DigitalArt #NFTs #Web3 #Innovation #Technology #USFLaw #CLTSG

How can lawyers help their business clients navigate #AI risks in this new era? Center Director Michele Neitz enjoyed presenting to the Business Law Section of California Lawyers Association with Aigerim Dyussenova and Vasudha Hegde yesterday. The session is recorded for those who may have missed it, but here are our Top 5 takeaways: 🚨 Know your client's risk tolerance. 🏛️ Focus on building frameworks, but know that it is always easier to expand an existing governance framework to include new #AI components. 🔍 Watch for compliance triggers ✔ Be ready for renewed attention on transparency and accountability 🌁 Other jurisdictions are watching #California, so you should be ready to explain these laws to your clients in other states. As Professor Neitz often tell her Bus Associations students: When you're navigating litigation risks you'll pay for a lawyer now or later--much better to hire the lawyer now!
