𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲’𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 The Indus Valley Report 2025 from Blume Ventures highlights a key trend in India’s consumer economy, 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝟭 (the top 10% of the population) continues to drive discretionary spending, while broader consumption growth remains uneven. Here are the critical insights shaping the narrative: >> 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: • India’s wealth grew at a 𝗖𝗔𝗚𝗥 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟰% (𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟬-𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟬) and 𝟳% (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟬-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯),the 5th highest globally. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟭𝟬% 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝟱𝟳.𝟳% of national income, up from 34.1% in 1990. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝟱𝟬%, 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟱%. >> 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: • 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀: Economy segment shrank from 29% (FY19) to 18% (FY23), while premium and executive segments expanded. • 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: Share of high-end to ultra-luxury homes doubled in five years in India’s top cities. • 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀: Premium (> $500) and mid-premium ($300–500) segments saw strong growth, while the low-end market contracted. >> 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: • 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹: Post-COVID recovery is slow, passenger traffic reached 154M in FY24, just above pre-pandemic levels. • 𝟮𝗪 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀: Still below FY19 levels, recovering only modestly to 18.3M units in FY24. • 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 (𝗭𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗔𝗨𝘀): Growth plateauing around 20M users since FY24. >> 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀: • 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝟭 is thriving and spending, but 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝟮 and 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝟯, the broader middle and lower-income segments, are lagging. • The top 10% over-index on consumption, 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟯𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀, 12x on medical expenses, and 11x on out-of-home food. For brands, investors, and policymakers, India’s consumption story is one of deepening rather than broadening. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀. Is India’s consumption boom sustainable if it remains concentrated at the top? Let’s discuss. 𝗣.𝗦.
