Why is HR still treated like a support function instead of a core driver of business success? HR leaders don’t need to earn their seat at the executive table—it’s already theirs. But too often, they’re undermined, ignored, or left out of the conversations that shape the future of their companies. In this #BravelyReplay from the #WorkBravely Conference, Hebba Youssef and Sarah Sheehan talked about this disconnect. On one hand, HR is responsible for every single part of the employee experience—hiring, development, engagement, retention. On the other, their voices are still dismissed at the executive level. We agree with Hebba: your people are your biggest asset. And HR is the team responsible for making sure those people thrive. So why are we still sidelining the leaders who hold companies together? #hr #hrexecutive #hrleadership

Have you ever looked at the diversity of a company’s leadership team when deciding if you want to work there? In a conversation during the #WorkBravely Conference, Tony Bond, Chief Diversity and Innovation Officer at Great Place to Work, shared a powerful insight: soon-to-graduate students are assessing companies by looking at the leadership team, saying, 'If I don't see people who look like me on the executive team, I'm not interested in that company.' The next generation is making intentional choices about the spaces they want to be a part of. And honestly? They’re onto something important. Words matter, but actions—and representation—speak volumes. Building true diversity at the top is a visible sign of a company’s commitment, and ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) can be a powerful way to help make this a reality. By tapping into and nurturing talent within these groups, organizations can create pathways to leadership, fostering an inclusive pipeline that reflects the company’s values. So, as companies strive to attract top talent and build trust, it might be time to reflect: Does your leadership team reflect the diverse, inclusive values you promote? Are you leveraging ERGs to cultivate future leaders? Putting The Human Back in Human Resources

Wow, what a great morning! Thank you to Bravely for hosting today's virtual #WorkBravely conference. All four sessions were relevant, shared great insights, and offered practical suggestions for people leaders. The first session with Sarah Sheehan & Tony Bond was called, "Invest in ERGs or Fall Behind: How They Drive Talent, Innovation, & Profit." I appreciated Tony's perspective that participating in and leading an ERG is a good place to develop leadership skills, including self-advocacy and the ability to connect the ERG's goals to the larger organization's business goals. My favorite conversation was between Hebba Youssef & Sarah Sheehan. If you're familiar with Hebba, you know she is transparent, vulnerable, and hopeful. "HR Unfiltered: The Mess, the Stress, and Why Everybody Hates Us" brought all the feels. As an HR professional, I felt seen. The amount of love and celebration in the chat and reactions to this session was off the hook! There were so many great points, but I want to highlight what Hebba shared about overcoming any negative perceptions about HR. It has to start with the CEO. When the CEO is HR's biggest advocate, that will squash any undermining and going around HR. "Surviving Election Chaos: How to Keep Employees Engaged During Political Turmoil" with Yennie Rautenberg-Loya, PCC, Kristen Swigart, PhD, & Alex Seiler could not be more timely. Again, so many good takeaways. What stood out was being mindful and intentional about elections and politics holds broader implications. Remembering that people are more than one issue, that we need to create safe (and brave) spaces, and not 'other-ising' people apply to organizational culture and employee experience, not just politics. The last session was, "When Managers Are Struggling and Damaging Engagement: How to Turn Things Around," with Toni Thompson (Nadal), Jennifer (Alessandra) Lucas, & Debra Turner Bailey. The issue that really hit home was the fact that organizations often don't have clarity about what they need or what they expect from their managers. It makes sense that managers would struggle since they don't have clear expectations and know what competencies they need to work on. Jennifer shared how her org started by providing front-line management training to all people-leaders so everyone (including the C-suite) had the same foundational knowledge. Thank you again to Bravely for hosting (and Barbara Saramak for coordinating) today's conference! #HR #HumanResources #PuttingTheHumanBackInHumanResources

🗳️ Election day is here: What will you say to your team after the results come in? In times like these, the stakes feel high, and emotions can run deep. But as leaders, we have a choice—do we stay silent, or do we open up space for our teams to feel seen and supported? Kristen Swigart, PhD (Culture Amp) shared one hot take at last week's WorkBravely Conference. She shares some timely advice: approach these conversations with thoughtfulness and neutrality. Rather than reacting from a personal perspective, show up with a genuine desire to support your team. Instead of statements that can create division, acknowledge that this is a sensitive time for many—no matter the outcome—and create a safe space for everyone. Sometimes, a simple acknowledgment can make a big difference. “I recognize this is a tough time for many” can go a long way in helping your team feel supported and included. Offering resources like mental health days or EAPs can further show that you’re aware of the heightened sensitivities and are ready to support those who need it. As we navigate the coming days and weeks, let’s remember: we have the power to foster unity and prevent feelings of “otherness” in our workplaces.
