This past weekend, Undergraduate Researcher Franchesca Vilmenay ’26 and Research Associate Paula Chaves da Silva traveled to the Washington, DC offices of Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Edward Markey, and Representative Katherine Clark to explain the power of the undergraduate research experience and describe their work on NIH contributions to new drug approvals and the value this creates for both private enterprise and society. They were participating in the Council on Undergraduate Research's 2024-2025 Scholars Transforming Through Research (STR) Program, which provides training and exposure to the process of advocating for research and research-based educational practices. Franchesca and Paula's research here in our Center focuses on assessing the social and private value created through commercialization of innovative pharmaceutical products and the returns on both public and private sector investments in these products. Their work demonstrates the enormous value created by National Institutes of Health funding for basic and applied biomedical research and the role of drug prices in ensuring an equitable balance between public and private returns. About us
Created in 2012 with a generous grant from the National Biomedical Research Foundation to Bentley University, the Center for Integration of Science and Industry brings together faculty, students, and visiting scholars in an interdisciplinary effort to improve the efficiency of translating scientific discoveries to create public value. The Center is an environment for thought leadership that brings together interdisciplinary scholarship in fields spanning science, technology, management, finance, and public policy. This scholarship will be informed by expert workshops as well as contributions to the practices of both public and business organizations. We expect that our work will meaningfully inform the practice of translational science and promote public value in the form of enhanced personal well-being, public health, environmental quality, sustainable development, and economic and social growth.

Last week, we hosted a fireside chat on what truly makes innovation work with Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister, the founding CEO of Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. Thank you Dr. Windham-Bannister for sharing such valuable insights on the pieces of an ecosystem and the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing innovation capacity—your expertise and perspective made for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion. Thank you to Payal Arya, PhD for moderating this amazing session. We are also grateful to The Center for Women and Business at Bentley University and Bentley University Center for Health and Business for co-sponsoring this event. Our work (Cleary et al., 2023) was cited by The New York Times this week as evidence of the critical importance of the NIH: "The National Institutes of Health, the world’s leading public funder of biomedical research, has an enviable track record. Research supported by the agency has led to more than 100 Nobel Prizes and has supported more than 99 percent of the drugs approved by federal regulators from 2010 to 2019." Center for Integration of Science and Industry at Bentley University reposted this
Interesting representation of how research from the Center for Integration of Science and Industry at Bentley University fit with the work of other scholars describing the role of government funding (specifically, The National Institutes of Health) in the ecosystem for pharmaceutical innovation. The papers by Ekaterina "Kat" Cleary, PhD (2018, 2020, 2023), Zhou (2023), Ledley (2023), Beierlein (2017), and McNamee (2017) are from our research Center.
