Arete was proud to assist the student-led i5 Space program and the SDA TAP Lab, as undergrads from across the nation gathered at Vandenberg Space Force Base last week to watch the launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9. Arete mentored students and assisted them in collecting and analyzing data from event cameras, an emergent technology that measures positive and negative events asynchronously. By binning events, these cameras can produce videos with thousands of frames per second offering unprecedented detail. Check out the stunning video of the Falcon 9 launch recorded using a neuromorphic camera!

About us
Areté, an employee-owned company, is an advanced science and engineering company that provides innovative solutions to the most challenging technical problems faced by the United States Defense and Intelligence agencies. Areté is derived from the Greek word “ἀρέτη”, meaning the pursuit of excellence and the achievement of maximum performance. Areté was founded in 1976 by five scientists, tasked by the DoD to help solve the challenge of detecting weak signals in heavy clutter over very wide areas. The signatures involved in this work were so weak that any advancement in signal processing algorithms demanded a new approach and understanding of the underlying fundamentals affecting the sensors and signal phenomena in the environments of interest. This first-principles-of-physics approach has been a hallmark of Areté’s development programs for the past 40 years Areté now works across the electromagnetic spectrum. We develop sensors and the associated signal processing algorithms necessary for the extraction and interpretation of data for systems operating under water, in the atmosphere, and in space. With our emphasis on enhanced signal processing and real-time executable software, Areté is able to improve the performance of existing sensor systems at fractions of the cost and time to operations of replacement systems. We work directly with customers and partners seeking maximum performance. Building on our expertise in detection theory we will continue to exploit the contextual, spatial, spectral, and temporal characteristics of data, incorporating them into our signal processing algorithms. These robust algorithms will continue to enable Areté to rapidly deliver innovative solutions to the ever evolving challenges of our customers.

Arete demonstrated our Space Domain Awareness (SDA) capabilities with Base2, our prototype neuromorphic SDA telescope. Deployed at the SDA Tools Applications and Processing (TAP) Lab, Base2 is designed to track LEO satellites with an ultra-high temporal fidelity of ~20KHz equivalent frame rate, enabling next-generation Electro-Optical (EO) observations. As part of SDA TAP Lab Cohort 6, we are preparing to stream Base2 observations to the Unified Data Library (UDL), making this data accessible to the broader SDA community. Recently, the S4S Command Team visited the SDA TAP Lab for a firsthand look at Base2 and other SDA TAP Lab initiatives. Areté is proud to have provided Event Based Camera (EBC) sensor kits to students, along with instructions and mentoring on how to use them and interpret the data. Supporting hands-on learning experiences like this inspires the next generation of innovators in #SpaceDomainAwareness.
#Academic Update! As part of our partnership with i5 Space, the Lab is sponsoring 100 students from 9 universities to launch and track L1 "hobby" rockets with event-based (aka neuromorphic) cameras, and seismic sensors. Through this activity students get hands on experience with #space domain awareness related hardware, software, data and concepts related to space launch. Also, the event camera videos of launches...are really cool. Thank you to Areté for providing sensors and mentoring students along the way! Shout out to ROTC Det 780 and Aden Mickartz for being the first of the universities to complete their launch and data capture!!
