At the start of a new federal administration in the United States, it is common to expect some changes. This year, many federal employees are seeing many changes to their day-to-day life, unfortunately including job loss for some. While most people think that federal employees work exclusively in Washington D.C., they are actually spread out across the country. Which communities are at risk for high levels of unemployment if there are more layoffs?

Talk to friends, watch the news, or log into your favorite social media app, and it’s hard to not hear the chatter about the price of groceries, especially eggs. Sure, everything is more expensive than ever before, and where you often feel it is in your everyday living expenses. As a result, food insecurity is up across the country, even amongst employed Americans, according to Feeding America, a non-profit that combats hunger in America. Where in the U.S. does grocery spending account for the highest percentage of disposable income?

Over the decades, there have been many occasions when the data published by the Census Bureau is either likely or absolutely in error. Typically, we rely upon national and state level population estimates to use as control totals. This always presents a dilemma for a company like AGS, as our primary goal is to create the best small area demographic estimates possible. On the other hand, divergence from the estimates of the Census Bureau will be met with incredulity by users. After all, what small private company would claim to have better numbers than the government of the United States?

We have a family friend who recently moved to a new housing community a good thirty minutes from downtown. He is single and wants to meet someone and get married. Despite pleadings from family and friends that there would only be families in this community, he moved anyways. His thought? Young married couples would know single women to set him up with. So far, the experiment hasn’t worked out in his favor, and my guess is that he will give up and move closer downtown within a few years. Why? Traditionally, single people live downtown, and families live in the suburbs. But are there places where that differs? Are there any hot spots for singles to go and look for love?

If you want to go to a major event in another city, you need to think about where you are going to stay. Unless you can stay with family or friends, you are likely looking at a hotel. Since New Orleans is hosting back-to-back events this year, the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras, we looked at annual revenue per hotel room in New Orleans with the help of the team at Lodging Analytics Research & Consulting.

We hear it every year around this time, complaints from northern teams that their cities never get to host the Super Bowl. The last five host cities for the Super Bowl, including 2025, are New Orleans, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Tampa. And why, perchance, don’t you want to go to Minnesota in February? Well, it’s obvious: the weather. What if we added other variables? Could we once and for all show the best cities to host the Super Bowl?
