Important legislation was introduced today by Representatives @Donald Norcross and Brian Fitzpatrick that would allow physicians to prescribe Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and other necessary drugs during telehealth visits without the need for a prior in-person visit. The bipartisan, bicameral TREATS Act would also allow physicians to bill Medicare for audio-only telehealth services, supporting telehealth in rural communities where broadband is often needed to access healthcare. “Ratifying the TREATS Act would be a significant step forward, and we also encourage Congress and the Drug Enforcement Administration to work together to establish a permanent pathway for vulnerable and underserved populations to access controlled substances via telemedicine for other vital clinical conditions. This effort is crucial to ensuring holistic care for all patients so that no one is left behind,” said our own Kyle Zebley. Telehealth, Right Here, Right Now: calling on the U.S. Congress to vote to reassure coverage for Medicare and America's health care access to virtual care. In today's Health Populi blog, I have a call-to-action to the #USCongress to get the vote done and avoid the March 31, 2025, deadline to extend critical Medicare telehealth flexibilities that expire on Aptil 1st. This is about assuring affordable, accessible, effective care for Medicare beneficiaries throughout the USA. In my assessment of where we are "now," I go back to a report I wrote on behalf of California Health Care Foundation titled "Right Here, Right Now: Ten Telehealth Pioneers Make it Work" from November 2008....yes, 2008. I cite 3 of the ten #telemedicine leaders studied in the report, including Jay Sanders, M.D., Roy Schoenberg MD MPH, and Joseph Kvedar -- three physicians who "got" virtual care in its nascent era. Seventeen years later, I quote Dr. Sanders explaining how his work with #heartfailure patients then led him and colleagues to understand that, "home is where the exam room has to be." We have just over four weeks to avoid the real telehealth cliff and older Americans' ability to access necessary care when virtual platforms can make the difference between a patient with Medicare getting healthcare or not. Telehealth has enjoyed bipartisan support for years, and President Trump wisely expanded telehealth flexibilities on March 17, 2020. Congress, you can do this.
