My Turn – After announcing dozens of retirements from the ASCE staff team over the years, I now get to announce my own. Having joined ASCE as a student member over four decades ago, and serving on the staff team for nearly three decades, including 11 as executive director, I am retiring from ASCE at the end of this year. Following extensive reflection and discussion with the Society’s leadership, the timing of this decision is right for ASCE, for the profession, and for me. We have recently launched some exciting initiatives including the new ASCE2027 infrastructure event, governance reframing, AI readiness, Chi Epsilon integration as the civil engineering honor society of ASCE, a potential headquarters move, workforce initiatives, and much more. I believe the time is right for me to pass the torch to new leadership to move these initiatives forward. My time at ASCE has been an extraordinary privilege and honor, and I am exceedingly grateful to the volunteers and staff members that I have had the privilege to work alongside over these many years. My sincere thanks to everyone who makes ASCE such a wonderful and impactful organization, including the Board of Direction and volunteer workforce, and to the staff family that I have had the honor of supporting. Over the last decade, we released three infrastructure report cards and were instrumental in securing critical infrastructure legislation and raising the grades on our nation’s infrastructure; we created new standards, digital content, and certification programs; we created new endowments supporting students, younger members and military engineers; we navigated pandemic impacts; and because of the value we delivered to our members, we grew our global membership during a time when many associations struggled, adding individual members as well as corporate and DOT partners. Among major initiatives we advanced were a Sustainable Infrastructure standard, a Grand Challenge and a Future World Vision while producing 2 IMAX films and educational programs. I’m proud of these and many more accomplishments and grateful to have worked alongside so many dedicated colleagues who helped make my ASCE career so rewarding. Our progress and potential keep me hopeful for the future. Over the coming months, my primary focus will turn to ensuring my successor is set up for success. Our board will be conducting a comprehensive search for ASCE’s next executive director, so stay tuned for details. And for anyone who is interested in working for ASCE, I want to convey to you my passion for this vital organization, perhaps evident in this video our HR team prepared for new employee orientation - https://lnkd.in/ehjjMT3Y. ASCE is an extraordinary community and family, and it truly has been a privilege and honor to serve as Executive Director. Thank you all for your counsel, support, and friendship over the years.
A Welcome Message from Tom
