Today the Pennsylvania School Boards Association's International Study Group to Germany spent the day in Düsseldorf visiting the Ministry of Education for the State of North-Rhine Westphalia as well as the State Parliament of North-Rhine Westphalia. Pennsylvania and North-Rhine Westphalia are "sister states", a long-standing relationship which dates back to when the first Germans emigrated from Krefeld to Pennsylvania in 1683 and founded Germantown. At the NRW education ministry (https://lnkd.in/enUUXhvc), the delegation received an overview of the German apprenticeship system, learned about the ministry's efforts to support immigrant integration through education and multilingualism (https://lnkd.in/eacnpV3K), and took part in an interactive lesson on how AI is being used in the classroom (https://lnkd.in/eA66FcQz). At the Landtag Nordrhein-Westfalen, members of the State Parliament's Education Committee (https://lnkd.in/eCPWCASQ) and NRW-USA parliamentary group (https://lnkd.in/eipPy9Q5) shared their perspectives on the educational challenges facing the state and the efforts being undertaken to address them. Once again, both the Germans and Americans stressed the value in sharing ideas and experiences at the state level to find pragmatic solutions that can help prepare educate our youth for the future. We are grateful for all the support provided to us on this trip by Barbara Richter and her colleagues at the NRW Education Ministry! @Ministerium für Schule und Bildung des Landes NRW US Consulate General Duesseldorf German Consulate General New York Nathan Mains Britta Barrickman,Ed.D,CCP Megan Hamm Sabrina Backer Tiffany Cherry, JD, MBA Valerie Gaydos Lisa Hess, Ed.D. The Pennsylvania School Boards Association's International Study Group to Germany, administered by the ACG, had a fantastic first day in the towns of Siegen and Olpe! In the morning, the group meet with the Faculty of Mathematics at the Universität Siegen to learn about how AI can be used as an effective tool to empower teachers and students in the learning process (see https://kimadu.de/). The delegation also learned about a transatlantic STEM project that allows students to work on real-world pragmatic issues with industry partners to make the connection between math in the classroom and and how it is used in the workplace (see https://lnkd.in/eA-hiMmq). At the university's Center for Teacher Education and Education Research (https://lnkd.in/ebB8Asp9), we learned about the structure of teacher education in Germany, including its many challenges similar to the United States, in an engaging conversation with university administrators, faculty, and student teachers entering the profession. Our common challenges also pose many opportunities for future collaboration! At the Gymnasium (https://lnkd.in/eKjY-pEQ) in the small town of Olpe, the delegation had its first opportunity to see a typical German grammar school, discussing the courses offered, gaining an understanding for the school's administrative and funding structure, and talking with students about their experiences. Thank you to all our hosts for your Gastfreundschaft and openness in talking about these important education issues. We learned so much! For the next two days, the group will be in Duesseldorf, so stay tuned for more about their visits there later this week... @Ministerium für Schule und Bildung des Landes NRW US Consulate General Duesseldorf German Consulate General New York Nathan Mains Britta Barrickman,Ed.D,CCP Megan Hamm Sabrina Backer Tiffany Cherry, JD, MBA Valerie Gaydos Lisa Hess, Ed.D.
