You can follow this checklist to be ready for the interview: - Use the product thoroughly (think of gaps and suggestions) - Read customer reviews (talk to a few customers and ask them for feedback and feature requests) - Talk to ex and current employees to know about the culture (read Glassdoor, Grapevine) - Do thorough competitor research (Talk to them, use their products) - If possible, talk to VCs to understand the industry and their take on it - Checkout all the PR about the company (funding, product announcements etc) - Understand and watch their social media content

Demonstrate your agility. Early contributors at Startups wear many different hats, on many different projects and must be ready to pivot at a moment's notice. Also, demonstrate your ability to learn quickly, to work in the vague and problem solve, at pace and volume.

Most people hiring at a startup would be senior leaders, maybe even the founders, showing them that you really did your research not only on the company but also the field goes a long way. Many startups care about data, be ready to answer some questions or assessments around this. Stand out, ask very deep and specific questions that shows that you have done your research, this always sticks with the hiring team considering it comes last. You will know if they like you, they tend to move you fast on the funnel, be also ready to welcome changes as the process progresses, start ups are all about that, you may apply for one role and end up with another, stay flexible, stay fluid

Keep in mind it’s likely the company will fail in the first five years. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. When looking at the company ask about their fundamentals What is their business plan? How are they planning to capture market share? How are they funding the operations over the next 36 months?

The least you can do before applying for an interview is research about the company.Know the companies vision, mission,the problem they are trying to solve, their audience, consumers,competitors and traction.Know the job description for the job vacancy you are applying for.Have a proper pointers on how you can add value to their company if they hired you. At the end remember that going to an interview without any proper research about the company is such a deal breaker.

1. Startups look for people who are doers. You have to signal this through your profiles/resumes sent. Include links to portfolio, github, websites any side projects you did in the resume. If you are experienced, describe key actions taken and the resulting business benefit in a few lines. 2. Just including links to portfolio doesn’t matter. Startups go deep when shortlisting candidates. Your work on github for example, show recent activity. Recency of action taken matters to indicate that you are a chronic action taker along with being in a constant problem solving mode.

Tell as many stories as you can on your previous failures and successes. Share details that show how you kept learning and growing from all the ups and downs. Since I view the other applicants as rivals or competitors, my main goal is to present my relevant, one-of-a-kind experience, accomplishments, and lessons learned from mistakes and how I overcame them. I won't exalt my resume with outlandish claims of accomplishment. My willingness to be creative, flexible, and eager to learn new skills must come through in both my interview and resume.

Don't ask for a JD. Don't ask for process. Don't ask for documentation. Just ask what needs to get done. And tell them how you are going to do it.

If your values match the company values, and you are interviewing for a position that you know you enjoy and are great at, the start-up hustle won’t feel so bad. Whether it’s a start-up or a company that is 20 years old looking to bring back the mojo, culture is critical. Ask questions about the culture and ask the company what does it look like in the company? If the culture is “work hard and play hard” ask them when was the last time they played and if someone from work interrupted the play. If they did, they are just a work hard culture!

As an early-stage startup founder, it becomes very important for us to make sure that applicant is genuinely interested in solving the problem and not joining us because they want A job or just because the startup has been in the media for their growth trajectory and shows high potential or even because they simply want to change their job. At an early stage, we need passionate people who join the vision of the venture and not just the venture itself. Making sure we ask them questions of WHY this startup deep enough becomes crucial. I'd rather have a relatively less skilled or experienced person with passion to help us grow and solve the problem than someone who's a pro at something and wants to merely lead. It's always evident.

Fitting into a startup's culture is so much more than just a skills match. It's about sharing the vision, vibing with the team, and embracing the journey with curiosity and enthusiasm. Also give confidence to the interviewers, your workstyle, if you are an "add-on" or a "go-to". Being an add-on IMO, you'll be good at pushing the cart from the back, but the go-to's are the ones who take accountability for the outcome(s) and pull the cart from the front. Demonstrating these values will instantly build the trust factor with the interviewer.

I would also add that your inquisitiveness and readiness to learn and evolve are crucial. Given the dynamic and rapid nature of startups, they require individuals who can swiftly adjust and acquire new knowledge. Demonstrate your enthusiasm for embracing new challenges, acquiring new abilities, and perpetually enhancing your skills.

Get to know the people and see if you like and respect the people. Also do ask about financials - have they raised funding, who from, has it been banked or is it milestone driven etc. Basically you want to make sure that you are paid for your input. If you are taking equity, look at the ESOP carefully.

Asking questions in an interview is like having a friendly chat. It's not just about them questioning you; it's also your chance to see if the job suits you. Ask about the team, the projects—get a feel for the place. It shows you're interested and helps you decide if it's the right fit. So, when they ask if you have questions, don't hesitate! And also understand that a title is merely a starting point, the great thing about startups is that they give you an opportunity to grow past what your initial role or title may be.

I remember doing this in one of the interviews and one of the panelists was surprised that I had gone that deep in reading the documents, he was like "did you read even that" I got the role.

🚩 Joining us because you "want to learn and take more responsibility in a fast paced environment" -- this is something they could do in ANY startup they join. As a startup it becomes difficult to take responsibility to upskill someone and help them specialize -- they need to do it on their own and play multiple roles. We need to make sure the answer to "Why us?" comes with a strong passion to solve the same problem and join the shared vision. This goes a long way. Questions like -- When do you think will be the right time to leave us? What happens if you realize that we aren't a good cultural fit for you? How do you plan to resolve conflicts when the team expands & if you've differences? Why take a pay-cut to join us? Why -- everything.

One must forecast the future of the role and relate it to companies success, asking about growth plans shows your interest in learning and willingness to participate in growth "how can my role influence the change" is the question that should be asked!

One of the most important things I hire for is personality; can do attitude, initiative, collaboration skills and being kind. In a startup there are so many roles to do that if someone can use their initiative and are happy to get involved with a whole range of jobs then that’s a brilliant start!

There is a famous quote from Bruce Lee "You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. The best advice I can give for startup interviews is to prove that you are able to own a project and create long lasting processes. Startups often deal in the world without standard operating procedures. Have you built an SOP? When? What were the results (in hard numbers if you have them)?

People love to hire people and not robots. Authenticity makes a lot of difference when it comes to connecting with people at a deeper level. A lot of times people try to fake things and manipulate while in an interview, but that can fire back badly. It is always better to put forward your real self while in an interview. Along with confidence, clarity of thoughts will help tremendously when you go for an interview.

In an early stage company it’s likely you will be working with the founder. It’s important to know that person‘s background. Do they have any experience leading companies? Do they have extensive management experience? So often the answer is no to these questions, so you need to understand how you will then fit in. What will be your span of control, your true role in decision-making? With this line of questioning you’re really trying to ascertain their ability to surround themselves with seasoned people to help grow the company to the next level, or frankly if they may not be able to let go. It is critically important to understand this in order to ascertain fit for all involved.

Beyond these focal points, consider the potential for learning and growth, the impact of your role, and how your expertise can contribute to the startup's journey. Your adaptability and willingness to evolve in a rapidly changing startup landscape are invaluable assets. Be keen to learn. We can teach skills, but it's almost impossible to teach someone to be passionate. When caught between two great candidates, it often comes down to who demonstrated they were the most keen and passionate to learn about the company's work. You can show keenness in a few ways: - Have specific questions about the company and their products/services/industry - Mention projects or campaigns that you found genuinely interesting and why - follow-up before and/or after the interview. Even if the follow up is questions, examples or work, or a thanks-for-your-time, you're more likely to be top-of-mind for the person doing the hiring.

You have entrepreneurial goals ? Start up job can prepare you well for it . It is an OJT for tomorrow ! Working in a start up is as good as running your own if you have the right mind set . You learn all aspects of work , racing against time , managing the lulls , respecting all the work you end up doing and completely hands on ! It is critical that there is a method to the madness set early on , foundation built wisely and you ensure your learning is complete by taking up initiatives. Be positive , and when you are part of the success your growth can be faster than you ever envisaged . It is a different route , often bumpy and adventurous, but it will take you to your goal swifter and all charged up .

Be deeply inspired at the difference that will be made if the startup is successful … and, be ready to work 60 to 70 hours a week for sweat equity ongoingly. I’ve worked for three, where only one survived providing the equity. Big investment of time with no guarantees. Not for the majority.
